Hi There,

I'm not sure about what infomercial you saw, but I learned to read at 18 months, and I am doing the same program with my son.  My mom followed the Glenn Doman method, and he has a book called "How to teach your baby to read".  It involves flash cards.  It is so interesting!  I have always read really, really fast, while remembering everything, and I think that is in large part because of how young I was when I first learned word recognition.  Check out that Glenn Doman book!  You can find it on Amazon.  There is also one called "How to teach your baby math" but I haven't started that yet!

i know the effects of this happening.  i was the only one in class to make a 100 on a math test and everyone else failed.  the teacher said that everyone was going to have to stay in during recess but that i could go out and play.  so, who do you play with when your the only one on the playground.  and what about the strange looks you get even from your friends.  let babies be babies and children be children, they will take a lot fewer pills as they get older.

ohh, c'mon!
i highly doubt warren78218's child, or any other, will be left out
because he or she is TOO smart. i don't even have kids,
but jump starting them doesn't seem like a bad idea at all.

besides, these days, with all the programs like this,
you're probably doing the exact same thing as other parents.
a few friends of mine have had kids within the past few years
and it doesn't seem like they want their children AHEAD of anyone.
they just want to help them excel...

i can understand the negative side of this, if we're talking about
the type of *bleep* parents who do absolutely nothing but force
their children into learning/reading/etc...

but i see nothing wrong with this.
all the best of luck to you &your baby

Giving your child the opportunity to excell over his or her peers is a very good idea, because in this day and age, it's all about competition. In my school, there isn't one "popular" kid that isn't in advanced classes. It's all about how good your future is going to be as a direct result of your intelligence. Give your child the chance, but at the same time, don't let thie rlives revolve around just academics, also balance it with extracurriculars such as sports. Exeryone loves a well rounded person.

i disagree, the earlier children start learning the better there education level will become
give the kids a head start
thats how i got in the top 10%, automaticaly admitted with a scholarship to a university this fall

It doesn't teach them to read correctly by teaching phonics, I too saw this infomercial and did some research because I am a born skeptic.  It teaches them to read by sight alone and there are only few words that are considered "sight words" and elephant is not one of them.  I suggest that before starting your child on a program like this you do some research of your own!

Teaching kids to read at a young age isn't a bad idea, but I don't think you need to spend money on products you see on infomercials.  I learned to read when I was a toddler because my parents sat with me every night and read to me.  I learned to recognize words because they would point each one out as they read aloud.

Does it make it difficult for a kid to be ready for chapter books when her peers are stumbling through early reader books?  Absolutely.  I was always bored in class when we worked on reading.  But I can't imagine not doing the same thing for my daughter.  The reading comprehension skills I learned helped me win several contests in high school, and eventually got me a scholarship.  It was frustrating in second grade, but totally worth it in the long run.
