(I found this news story while I was looking for articles & reading about "The God Particle")

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has taken the unusual step of making a public declaration that half-human, half-fish creatures inhabit only our imagination -- not our oceans.
"No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found," NOAA's National Ocean Service division said in a recent blog posting.

Typically, the division is tasked with addressing coastal threats such as climate change, population growth, port congestion and contaminants. But it waded into more whimsical water recently after the Animal Planet network aired a show titled "Mermaids: The Body Found."

The cable TV show suggested  that mermaids are far more than fanciful sirens. To bolster its case, it cast a spotlight on -- among other things -- an early cave drawing in Egypt believed to hold the most ancient depiction of mermaids.

The cave drawing does indeed show that mermaid legends have existed since the start of recorded history -- and across cultures. As the National Ocean Service points out, the ancient Greek epic poet Homer wrote of mermaids in "The Odyssey," and Far East lore and legend held that mermaids were believed to be the wives of powerful sea-dragons. Even the aboriginal people in Australia had a word for mermaids: They called them yawkyawks.

Nonetheless, there is no scientific evidence that mermaids exist today -- or have ever existed.

The National Ocean Service asks, but alas, does not answer the question you're no doubt wrestling with at this very moment: If there's no evidence to suggest that mermaids are real, why, then, do they occupy the collective unconscious of nearly all seafaring peoples?

The division adds: "That’s a question best left to historians, philosophers, and anthropologists."

So. The American government made a public statement denying the existence of Mermaids - due to a documentary that had some people believing in mythical creatures that have never been seen, nor has any physical evidence been discovered that proves otherwise.

what a bitter sense of naive(ness). THE REASON THAT YOU MAY WANT TO NOT BELIEVE WHAT WAS SO CLEARLY AND INTELLIGENTLY DONE BY FORMER HONEST NOAA STAFF SCIENTISTS AND DOCTORS( AS WELL AS OTHER SCIENTISTS AND DOCTORS WITH NOTHING TO GAIN AND EVERYTHING TO LOSE WITH THERE TRUTH TELLING ) IS BECAUSE THE HEAD OF NOAA NOW HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ENTIRE FILM!!!  much less any of the research and hard work  that went into this highly hidden/cloaked reality of an human like ocean bound creature. Not to mention what happened to all there proof of this life form's existence, IT GOT SNATCHED AND STOLEN AWAY FROM THEM BY ??? law enforcement/big brother/shady govt officials   TYPICAL!!!!!! but i can only imagine how this may come as a very hard reality blow to some over zealous religious extremists , who probably dont even understand the term "OPEN mindedness" or "FREE thinker" . but it is those "TYPES" of people who can be better off being TOLD what to think and what to believe and to NOT DARE EVER ASK questions, (military thinking) because the people who do ask questions, and dont automatically claim that whatever there told to believe by government is FACTUAL/100% true!!!  lol,   i have much empathy for that ROBOT type thinking in HUMAN BEINGS,  its our next horrible step towards making ARTIFICIAL intelligence an REALITY

It would really be nice if you could post your REPLY to a post that you are quoting AFTER the quote, not WITHIN the other person's quoted post.

.....so your post WOULD have (and should have) been posted like this:

OK.
First of all....
My comment on the news story "Hallelujah!  Praise god almighty up in heaven!  They must have come to their senses!!!"
was totally facetious, sarcasm, a smart- :bootyshake: remark.   (It was basically poking fun at religious believers)

So I sincerely hope you were not calling ME an over-zealous religious extremist......

Nextly - (not a word I know, but I like it and I'm using it anyway)

Are you not aware that Animal Planet ran a disclaimer at the end of the "TV Movie" stating that it only contained BITS of truth?

Are you not aware that Animal Planet said this in a press release about the "TV Movie":
"Editor's Note: This two-hour special is science fiction based on some real events and scientific theory."

The "TV Movie" is listed on IMDB (listing the actors who portrayed the scientists in the film, including Dr Paul Robertson)

There is much more information out there, all of it making it SO obvious that "Mermaid Body Found" was not something that actually occurred, nor is this a factual film.

So I don't think you need to be pointing the finger at me as the naive one here.

Yes, some of us realize that, but you would be extremely surprised at the number of people who are arguing about this on different forums on the net.

google animal planets mermaids - it's amazing that they have really convinced that many people with this show.

Well alrighty then!!

For those of you who may BELIEVE the Animal Planet "MOCKumentary" was a DOCumentary, here's something you will be happy to read;

For the rest of us, who realize this show was NOT a fact-based record of anything, it will still be amusing to read. (And will also confirm for you that 'some' people WILL believe anything.)

Posted on weeklyworldnews.com (which is apparently like a web version of The national Enquirer) on July 5:
(2 days after the ACTUAL statement by NOAA denying their existence was posted)

U.S. CONFIRMS EXISTENCE OF MERMAIDS
by Frank Lake on July 5, 2012

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirmed that mermaids exist and that they are growing in numbers.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reportedly published a post on their “Ocean Facts” newsfeed titled “Conclusive Evidence of  the Existence of Aquatic Humanoids.”

The agency went on to say that “magic females”, who first appeared in cave paintings in the late Paleolithic (Stone Age) period some 30,000 years ag, when modern humans began to sail the seas, do exist and are living in all the oceans of the world.

Animal Planet television recently aired a special called “Mermaids: The Body Found,” that also proved the existence of mermaids.

National Ocean Service spokeswoman Sandy Nixon told WWN that “at least 65 mermaid researches and experts gathered on the island of Tahiti to examine all the known evidence and have concluded, emphatically, that  half human half-fish hybrids are living peacefully among us.

Mermaid experts say that the majority of mermaids are in the warmer waters of the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, but that many have been spotted in the Pacific Ocean and Southern Atlantic.  ”There is a large school of mermaids, swimming just outside Ocean City Maryland,” said mermaidologist, Marcus Plumkin, of the University of Florida.

WWN has also learned that recently the U.S. government has captured 7 mermaids and that they are being kept at an undisclosed aquarium, where they are being studied.  President Obama has personally met the mermaids and was quite impressed – according to reports.

So, if you’re at the beach… keep a lookout for mermaids.  They are out there!

I'm just really having a hard time believing no-one is interested in commenting of any of this.

There are people on different forums all over the internet ARGUING VEHEMENTLY for one side or the other on this.....

(REALLY? No-one is envious of Obama getting to "meet" the captured mermaids?)

Lol!  I have to agree with you on this!  Your topic enlightened me with knowing there are actually people who really do believe that mermaids exist.  I wouldn't be able to wrap my head around agreeing with them.  And to think these people are being fed by articles like that one just to goad them on.

Obama meeting them?  Ha ha - where are the pictures for that?  Something of that magnitude would have had the media gushing all over him taking his pictures with these "mermaids!!"   ::)

Great post, by the way!
