Let’s talk electronics.
« on: August 30, 2012, 12:10:50 pm »
I just bought a New HP Officejet Pro 8600 plus.  I rate this about a 4 out of five stars.  It is deffiately not the must have printer of the year unless you use it strickly for buisness purposes such as scanning, copying, faxing and printing documents, spreadsheets or powerpoint etc.  Any slick paper, such as photopaper it has an extremely hard time grabbing.  Then when it finally does grab the paper (and this only happens if the paper is stacked all the way to its fullest compasity and I only get that by sticking a couple photo papers sheets on top then loading as much plain white paper undereneath as will fit in the tray) and prints the photo it comes out decent enough but there is a streak or line every two inches across the snapshot.  This doesn’t happen when a photo is printed on plain white paper.  Program used doesn’t matter because I used powerpoint for both.  So if looking for a professional grade printer this is definitely the one.  It prints so fast papers nearly fly out.  Words are crisp and clear. No streaking or blurriess.  Scans are so near perfect they don’t look like they are scanned.  Copies so vivid you can’t tell which is the copy or the original.  Wireless signal has picked up both computer and laptop every time either one or both are turned on.  Double sided gadet attached to the back has never failed.  However, if you are looking for a personal all-in-one save your money and looked for something else because no one wants lined photos.  Clearly when best buy advertises this printer the photo sticking out of its paper tray is not one it printed itself.

I knew that windows 8 was coming out soon and I had a laptop with Windows 7 on it.  Now I loved the old Windows XP.  It is my favorite Operating System.  I had bought a laptop at the tail-end of Vista.  I hated Vista with a passion.  So did a lot of people which is why Vista didn’t last too long.  I was afraid that Windows 8 would be all like Vista and while windows 7 isn’t as great as XP, I do like it.  So because I knew that I needed a new computer I made sure I bought Windows 7 a few months before Windows 8 (now out) was to arrive.  I am so glad I did.  I just don’t get why Microsoft has to mess with a good thing.  I mean that XP to Vista was awful.  Windows 7 works.  Why mess with it?  Yah, I know. Money.  Like they don’t have enough of that already.

It kinda made no sense to me that people were buying tables then having to buy the keyboard attachment.  I mean if you wanted to turn your tablet into a laptop why not just buy a laptop.  Then the Ultrabook just came out.  Now that makes sense to me.  Hp has one that the screen just detaches from the keyboard (it’s touch screen).  Levno (I think the company is called) makes one where the screen slides over the keyboard to turn it into a tablet.  Intel makes one where the screen swivels inside its frame so you can just flip the screen over on its back to turn it into a laptop.  The next laptop I get will sooo be one of those.

I am really tempted to buy an Ipod.  I have a Zune MP3 player (had to get one because at the time it was the only company that made one with radio stations).  The new Ipod has radio stations and it’s at least up to 32GB.  Zune doesn’t make the player I have anymore and with your smart phone doing everything now they hardly make players anymore.  Even shelf stereo systems are hard to find now.  Everything they do make is for an Ipod so I may eventually have no choice.  I might need to get one before my MP3 player dies and its at least four years old now.

So I’m old school.  I still play on a computer rather than hook up to my tv.  The only problem with that is the computer games coming out now (on the rare occation when companies still make computer games) is that its all hidden object games.  I guess because all the first person games are going to PS, XBox etc. the computer games have to do something different to still be ‘out there’ rather than obsolete (which they actually are).  It’s sad in a way but I guess I don’t blame companies.  I mean with computer games once a new operating system comes out and you are stuck buying a new computer those games that worked on the old system won’t work on the new one.  Look at all that money wasted.  I was basically lucky to find a few of my favorite games reissued for a new system.  Of course I had to rebuy them but at least I got them.  With an XBox or PS you just buy the game that matches your system.  No matter what year you buy the system you don’t have to worry about it not working on it.  (Unless the game disc scratches or something.)

So the first thing I do when I buy a new computer or laptop is always change the settings.  First it’s the screen savor and then the colors.  I use the same screensaver and colors I always have no matter how many machines I change out.  It’s for that familiarity.  If I see the screen savor and colors I always have even though its on a new machine it doesn’t feel so much like a new machine.  It’s a comfort, like an old friend. While the machine may be a couple days old because of the old ‘worn out’ colors and screensaver it seems like the old machine.  It’s a mental thing….or maybe I’m just weird.

So I have a pair of Bose speakers.  I want to say they are well worth the price but I kinda don’t really know what I was expecting.  What really makes the Bose is that you are getting a stereo system sound in tiny speakers.  Not disappointed or anything but if Bose didn’t make their stuff so tiny they would totally be over rated. Because I don’t have the space for a streo surround sound system, Bose was worth the high cost.  But of you have the room, then it is just a waste of money.

So when I got my new computer I already had a wireless mouse and keyboard.  I have to say with the way the room is set up I definitely had to go wireless.  The new computer is wirelessly connected to the internet and the printer.  While I believe they are as secure as they can be, I just can’t go back to wires which might be better.  I can’t stand wires and with my printer I have both a computer and laptop.  My old printer was such a pain in the butt.  I mean it worked great but every time I had to print I had to unplug the wire from one machine and plug it into which ever machine I was using at the time.  Same with the internet.  I hated it.  Now I don’t have that hassle.  (I just have to worry that one day the ‘signal’ between the computer and device (be it the router or printer) might not work.  As for right now they do so I’m not gonna worry until it happens.

I purchase a new printer-Lexmark Pro715.  It is great and everything is always so crisp and clear.  I love it and the ink cartridges doesn't cost a lot.

I just bought a pair of Ultimate Ears 350vm noise-isolating headset in-ear earphones by Logitech.  I was honestly undecided whether to go with noise cancelling or sound isolating.   Now noise canceling you can get as cheap as 5bucks.  Sound Isolating start at a buck more but to get both that starts at 20 dollars.  Basically Sound Isolating and Noise cancelling to the same thing (let’s you hear your music rather than exterior sound) except Sound Isolating is more powerful that’s why anyone of those type need a battery.  Ergo it’d be heavier which might cause it to constantly fall out of your ear.  I basically had a pair of 32 dollar Sony’s that didn’t do either and since Sony doesn’t even make the kind I had anymore I decided to ‘upgrade’.  One may argue that Isolating is better than Cancelling but honestly I think it comes down to the company that makes it not type of product.  Not having enough for the Bose and not even sure if I would like the in-ear bridge design (which is made for runners so it won’t fall out) I went with the Logitech.  Basically, all Noise Cancelling does is give you a couple pairs of earbuds in several different sizes (material its made from I don’t think matters) and you have to figure out which one is an ‘airtight’ fit for your ear (otherwise it’s no different than buying a regular pair of earphones.)  That airtight fit is what gives you the Noise Cancelling which basically does not cancel all background noise.  It does the same thing as if you were sleeping with earplugs.  It makes the external sounds quieter which makes you able to hear your music without having to turn up the volume.  I have to say the Logitech is a better sound than the Sony (which I was so happy with I had gotten two pairs when they still made it) and after finding the right earbud that gave me the airtight fit it was like I was hearing my music for the first time.  There were background beats to songs I never heard before even though I’ve heard the songs a hundred times.  I have to say I’m happy with it and the Noise Cancelling is good enough for me.  I just think it’s a little too overpriced which I think is due to the fact that UE is used by professionals (which they make a point of stating not only all over the box, but they give you a little booklet which has pictures of professional musicians like Seal using them.)

Logitech usually makes pretty solid equipment for PC stuff.  I have a Mic and keyboard they've made.  Plus, some speakers for another PC.

I have windows 7 on both my laptop and computer.  I have an htc windows phone that comes with 8.  Now there isn’t that big a difference going from 7 to 8 however the biggest change are the tiles.  You no longer have icons for things anymore you have tiles.  They are literally square blocks with the old fashioned icon in the middle.  Not that it’s a problem, but it really only works on a touch screen (like my phone).  Keep in mind that is why windows 8 commercials are all shown with someone using a TOUCH SCREEN.  You can use an ‘old fashioned’ screen (i.e. non-touch) but keep in mind that your cursor is still stuck acting like your finger.  (I.E. you’ll have to move your cursor around to the tile you want rather than just pushing the tile you need or holding the mouse down to ‘grab the screen’ to slide it over if the tile you need is not on the main screen.)  It’s so much easier to just swipe with a finger to the left or right to get the screen you need and just touch the tile you need rather than maneuvering a cursor.  So if you don’t have a touch screen I recommend you DO NOT upgrade from 7 to 8 or if in the market for a new computer save your money until you can buy one with a touch screen.  Otherwise you’ll just end up reverting back to the old classic screen (which you can) but that defeats the purpose of windows 8.

I have to say I have to prefer windows 7 to 8 not because it’s more complicated because the truth is it’s just as easy to use.  The problem is windows 8 is only compatible with a touch screen computer where as 7 can be used with any computer or laptop (even though the comercials state otherwise).  Though that being the only flaw, windows 8 isn’t a bad upgrade from 7.  Though windows 7 is not as great as XP was, Vista is still the worst operating system Microsoft ever made.  So glad that system didn’t last long.  I never found anyone who had a good thing to say about Vista and personally getting stuck using it myself I totally understand why.

I recently had a home theater system put in by Best Buy.  Total nightmare.  The old entertainment center I had in its place was (obviously) still there and they had no intetion of setting up the new one because they weren’t allowed to move furniture.  I told them they had no choice because the one they were putting in was going in that very spot.  The geek squad guy was said, “yeah we have a choice.  We can choose not to instal it.”  That’s when I snapped, “Well this was the day scheduled for install.”  The second geek squad guy said, “Let’s just move it out of the way.”  I think what really pisses me off was when you go to the best buy store buy the stuff then set up the scheduling they tell you something entirely different.  The first time I went into the store they told me, “Oh they take the furniture away.”  The second time I went to buy the rest of the stuff and set up the scheduling they told me, “They don’t take the furniture because they don’t recycle that but there should be no problem if you just ask them to move the furniture piece.”  Then the guys actually come and nearly refused to install anything because we had something in the way.  Seriously, best buy needs to change their policy.  Either allow the geek squad guys to move furniture or tell customers when the schedule is set up that whereever your having the install is being set up (especially if it’s like mine where it’s not just a new home theater but also a tv and tv furniture assembly) that they can’t touch furniture.
