Automatically Lock Old Threads
« on: October 28, 2012, 10:06:06 am »
It would be nice if threads older than 2 months were locked automatically if someone hasn't commented on the thread in over a month. I just see so many new people picking an old thread and asking why they can't find the offer......which had been gone for like 6 months. Then, since it brings it to the top of the forum, everyone reads it and starts commenting on it and asking new questions about a ridiculously old offer.

There are a lot of things that are out of date on here and many things have changed. There should be an archive separated from the current active and relevant postings if anyone wishes to research older items. I would also think that would cut down on the amount of band width or storage space that the site has to devote to keeping everything since day one available. I have never really understood why this has been the case, it would also help to cut down on the same questions being asked over and over and over and over again. Obviously some editing would be a great thing, but the reality unfortunately is probably that Admin just does not have the time to do it and to do it would cost money that could be paid out to members.

It would be nice to have some of those older ones locked.

Topics are automatically locked.  It happens after 270 days.
You can see the effect of this by checking an old topic listing page, e.g. http://www.fusioncash.net/forum.php?board=8.600 where you will notice 100% of topics are locked.

Yeah, I saw that. I just wished it were a little quicker, since it always seems like the newbies find the oldest threads possible to comment on.....lol

I agree 270 days seems quite a long time for a thread to be inactive to be locked. It's 9 months... You could have a baby in that time :P

I like this idea, and admin showed they DO lock old threads, but I agree that it should be quicker.

If our credits, our money, expires in 180 days, then why should it take even longer to lock a thread? Just saying no need that I can see to wait 270 days, especially considering our inactive money doesnt even last as long as our inactive posts!  8)

Because newbies will comment on an offer that was available like 6 months ago. Everyone starts commenting and questioning why they are not seeing this offer. New threads are started about trying to find the offer. It just gets kind of crazy all because someone didn't look at the date on the first post of the thread.

Great point(s) made here, kingreyam24, as well as the OP's post, and others.

People post on those old topics, leading to other new topics posted about something that (likely) no longer exists, and all it does is jam up the already packed forum, as well as probably confusing the crap out of some of the newer members.

Good to know they DO lock them, agree that 270 days may be a little long to wait.

How come it won't play?

270 days is a long time before a thread is closed and that amount of time then allows for more new things to be posted which in turn starts the clock for 270 days all over again , if I am understanding correctly because that newest post constitutes activity? It would still be nice just to have things moved to an archive area perhaps a little sooner to eliminate late posts and then close them down perhaps at 200 days ? It would certainly help to clean things up around here and if there is really significant content there that is still relevant then perhaps that information should be put into an FAQ area ? and then eliminate the rest.

I agree that the lockout date should be faster. I cannot count the numerous times I have look in a thread for a good offer and ended up not being able to find it because it was super old.

OK, I've adjusted it to 180 days auto-lock (down from 270).  It will take a few days to take effect.
