You know, in the Action, Adventure/Fantasy genre no matter what special effects they use, nothing compares to Willow.  It’s a simple story about an unlikely hero who has to save all good people from an evil queen and gain self confidence in the end.  In the end, when Willow gets the hero’s welcome he deserves it is well worth sitting through the two hours.  It truly is a timeless classic and one that unfortunately gets forgotten admits all the Lord of the Ring and Harry Potter Movies.  That is a shame because with its simplicity and beauty it’s much better than both—and only needed one movie to tell it’s story.

Watched Killing Lincoln which is narrated by Tom Hanks.  Now I really don’t go in for these type of historical/documentary type of movies but I enjoyed it.  At first Tom Hanks break in between each reenacted segment bothered me, but then as the movie progressed I got used to it.  It is really well done and paints and understanding picture of John Wilkes Booth  and why Booth felt compelled to Kill Lincoln.  There is no unnecessary information and deals directly with the planning and assassination of Abe Lincoln.  Truly well done and worth watching at least once if you are into that type of movie.  Like I said, I’m not and I enjoyed it.

Watched the Bride of Frankenstein, the original with Elsa Lancaster and it’s funny because that is what she is known for but she’s only in the last ten minutes of the movie but those ten minutes immortalized her career.

In the Original Bride of Frankenstein you feel sorry for Frankenstein.  Outside of the couple he kills in the beginning to tie it Frankenstein, he really didn’t kill anyone.  All he wanted was a friend.  When the blind man teaches him manners he really becomes a good person.  Or atleast tried to but because of what he was no one saw him as anything but a monster.  Even if he truly did change no one would let him.

I loved the little puns and jabs in Expendible 3. For example, the movie (spoiler alter) starts with the gang busty Wesley Snipes out of a prison train.  When asked what he did to get into prison in the first place he replied, “tax evasion.”  Another good one is when sly is seated at the table in the Expendable’s ‘home’ bar, and he is explaining to the gang why he is letting them go.  Basically he’s telling them how their old, the times are changing, nobody wants them anymore etc.  Definitely an analogy to each actor as an individual.  3 was definitely a great send off of the old action actors if Sly doesn’t want to do a 4th.

Talking of Expendibles 3, I was a bit skeptic of having Kelsey Grammer, Mel Gibson, and Harrison Ford in the cast.  I mean the past two movies were all about Action heros and I don’t really thing of action heros as being Gibson, Ford and certianly not Grammer.  Yes, Gibson is Mad Max and did the Leathel Wepons.  Yes Ford is our Hans Solo, and Indiana Jones.  But Indi and Max just don’t compare to Rocky, Rambo, and the Terminator.  Now that being said, the roles within Expendible 3 they were each given fit them perfectly.  Gibson as the art collector/weapons dealer/antagonist, yes, I bought it.  Grammer as the go-to guy when you need a team assembled, yeah I bought it.  And ford as the CIA guy/Helicopter pilot.  Come on he was Jack Ryan!  Not to mention the President of the USA!  So yeah, while I was skeptic of their roles in the movie because looking at that cast I thought well they’re just picking everybody who’s trying to make a comeback in the movies, once I watched it, it made prefect sence picking who they did.

Expendibles 3 was totally awesome!  I can’t say I love it better than the first two because I love the first two movies.  I will say that if Sly doesn’t make a fourth, this one was a great send off.  It was completely packed with more A-list stars than I think were ever in a movie.  I mean when you look back on the movies that had a top notch A-list cast such as the Magnificent Seven or the Great Escape at the time they did those movies, the actors weren’t really well known.  I mean this is pre-Bullet Steve McQueen here.  But throwing Sly, and Arnold, together with Wesley Snipes—that was sheer genius!

Much of Iron Man was filmed where I live in North Carolina.  Its so exciting to watch them film.  They won't always let us get close, but sometimes if you happen to be there at the right place at the right time they let you stand and watch if you are quiet.  I saw Robert Downy Jr, but only from a distance. Love him!

Haven't had much time to watch movies this year.  Anyone got some suggestions about movies from the past year you thought were really good and worth watching?
