How many eggs can 1 hen lay a day?
« on: March 14, 2013, 09:09:17 pm »
I have been searching and have not found this answer as of yet. I heard a lot of people say they can lay up to 3 eggs a day and others says only 1 a day. I agree to the one a day, BUT my neighbor swears his hens are laying 2-3 eggs a day.. I REALLY would like to know because I am raising hens now and I am very curious about this.  :BangHead: ??? :dontknow:

Lol, I was raised on a farm and that question never crossed my mind. Being that we had a chicken coop where each chicken had its own nest to lay eggs. When it was time to collect the eggs each day sometimes it would be 1 in the nest and sometimes 3 or 4. I personally don't think one can tell unless the chickens can't get access to each others nest. It would be fun to hear about your chickens/hens as you continue you quest for the truth.

My friend who has a couple of chickens says they can lay about 2 eggs a day, but it varies with the chicken.

I'm not sure and have raised chickens several time. A friend has 11 hens and is getting only 10 eggs a day.

My chickens only laid 2 a day. 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening. Of course i went out twice a day to gather. Unless i wanted one to start setting, then i would just leave her alone . Pretty soon they would hatch, what a joy watching the little ones running around.

Different breeds of chicken is a consideration. Some lay more than others as a general rule, and then you have to consider that each hen is an individual and some just are more prolific than others of the same breed.

There are quite a few internet sites that one can go to for more detailed info on all aspects of keeping chickens. 'Urban chickens' is a good search term I believe,

I have 7 hens and I get about 6 to 9 eggs a day, so not sure as it does change from day to day. But have noticed that my hens do not lay a lot when its winter time.

But I have heard that if you have a Roster and he around them they will lay more eggs. So there you have it.

I really like this post. Even though I don't have any chicks around I do have a pop belly pig in my back yard.

Yes, I would also be interested in finding out what happens in your research.  We are considering buying some chickens in the Spring.

I got curiously interested in this and found one particular web site that I thought was really informative.

They post a number of chicken breeds that are reportedly superior layers. As I recall they listed about 7 or 8 good laying breeds. Two of these were Leghorn and Rhode Island Reds.

Additional great info found was this; most breeds that are 'super engineered' for laying purposes are probably NOT the breeds you want for your own egg and meat production as they are NOT breed-able. So if you want to have birds that will provide you both eggs and chicks to 'keep the flock going' and for meat, you need to have breeds that are still capable of breeding. Leghorns and Rhode Island Reds are both breeds that can fit the need for both purposes, just remember you must have a rooster too!! :)

:dontknow: :dontknow:  When I was a kid we had chickens in a pen that I thought was huge, we got lots of eggs and sold some to neighbors.  I always thought it was just 1 egg a day.  This topic has been fun and  entertaining.

Really that kind of interesting.  I never heard that you set a roster beside it they lay more?

not disagreeing about the rooster BUT I have raised a lot of chickens roosters and hens. sometimes I have had only hens. i have 2 house one for my bantums and 1 for my older chickens. I do NOT keep roosters in with bantums but i do with the regular big hens I havent noticed much so I decided after these conversations, I have stopped by a chicken farm nearby. They are a very big company who sells eggs statewide. The owner had talked to me for over an hour. he was very pleasant and had patience with me with all my questions. he told me that it does not matter how many roosters you have with or without hens that its mainly due to the chicken itself. He also says they are not as stupid as we think they are. You pay attention to them thru out the day and they will reward you better. He said they have done a lot of experiences with them and thats what he found out but he also says NEVER to keep more than 1 rooster to 3 hens. The rooster would kill the hens. Well I do not know how true this is BUT I AM going to pay more attention to my hens and check them more often thru out the day to watch their activitys. I think this will be very interesting.  :dontknow: :dontknow: ??? :-
