Survival Techniques
« on: March 18, 2013, 09:30:34 pm »
I don't know why, but got on Youtube, and found what is called a Swedish Torch how to video, which led me to a coke can and how to make a stove using coke cans, which led me to rocket stove etc etc.  I found the videos very educational, and started looking into other things you can do with normal household items etc, to make a fire and boil water to cook food, etc etc. Well anyway, I was just wondering if we have any survival specialists out there on FusionCash, that might give us some helpful tips in case of an emergency that could occur like another Katrina, or Sandy.  Just how to survive, have fire and water and cook even top romen (sp), when everything else is down, like electricity, water and power. How can you survive.  Shelter etc. warmth, is that possible with the rocket stove?   Well just a though

A Boy Scout Hand Book is an excellent little basic referance book and there are a lot of US Army manuals you can purchase. Printed matter is what you need, CDs and videos ain't cool when you don't have electricty!! :)  Also, there are a goodly number of web sites specifically built around the very topic you are asking about, lots of info free on those you can download and print out.

My husband and I do a lot of research, as I have said before on other threads.  One of the reasons we got into herbal medicines is due to a "worse case scenario" event.

What if something happened and we could not access medications?  Some medications will cause serious death or injury when discontinued abruptly.  Herbs seem to be the best way to go all around.

We have a camping bag that is filled with basic first aid items.  But it also contains a small doctor's kit, which includes scalpel, antiseptics, and wound closure needles.

We are in the process of getting a vacuum sealer to vacuum seal bulk foods.  We both know the principles of hunting, skinning, and tanning.  I know how to "cold weather" tan.

(I also know about the coke can stove.)

We know how to make clean water from urine and how to obtain water in dry places.

We also know how to make a light source using bleach and water.  (The sun must be out, too.)
