How to beat a cold
« on: April 27, 2013, 09:45:22 am »
I've been battling a nasty cold these past few days. Been taking medicine and drinking lots of fluids, particularly green tea, and resting whenever possible...

I'm curious. What methods do you use to ward off a cold once you've got one?

(P.S. That Cold-Eeze stuff did NUTHIN in the early stages  >:( )

Basically I drink a glass or 2 of water about every hour (even throughout the night as I'm getting up often).  Crank up the heat - get as warm as I can stand it.  Sleep as much as I can.

When I sleep in bed, I elevate my head/chest - prop up a couple pillows under neath - as that helps with congestion.

If you do soups - stick to broths, and add some extra garlic to it.

Blow you nose as often as possible.

I rarely take any medications as for me, they only prolonged/hindered my recovery.  I only take something when I can't breathe and need a decongestant to be able to get oxygen - particularly when I'm trying to sleep.

Mentally, I get in a mindset that I'm at war with whatever virus or bacteria is tearing me down.  Literally telling "the cold" it's war and I'm going to win.  Telling my white blood cells to seek and destroy.

I start on this regimen at the first signs of a cold - and I've rarely ever succumbed to it.

In the first place: Prevention is very important.  In the second place: Once you get a cold, prevention now is too late. Now you have to fight the cold very hard to get rid of it. Vitamin C works...and over the counter remedies also work. Drink lots of water.

I either just deal with it or, if I have time, the best way I've found to get rid of a cold is to take Nyquil (which always knocks me out for 12 to 24 hours) and then I just kind of sleep it off.

Vitamin C and lots of light liquids.  Rest as much as possible.

I feel for ya...I have also had the worst cold in a couple years.  I never get sick...knock on wood...but my son had it and I think I got it from him.  I have taken Dimetapp cold and allergy formula and that seemed to help but nothing will kick it in the  :bootyshake: except time and rest along with medicine!!!!  Hope you feel better soon!

When I get the cold, I try and just flush it out of my system. Get a gallon of yellow gatorade and drink a glass every hour or so. Also, dose up on dayquil and nyquil. If you get sick often, try taking daily vitamins with immunity boost. I rarely get sick, but I now work at an amusement park and having that many people come in every day I have been sick severtal times in the past few months. I started taking daily vitamins and been great the past 3 months.

You really can't do anything.  Just increase your vitamin c and get lots of fluids.

I think you just have to wait it out! I think doubling up on Vit C helps and eating chicken noodle sip, but time is hat you need!!!

I think the best thing in the world is to go to bed for 2 or 3 days and not get up. It's not always realistic but I have found that it makes a huge difference.  I'm a nurse and have tried just about everything.
