What is your opinion on givng kids cell phones??

My kids want one BADLY ???!!!  But we cannot afford it right now.

So what do you think is it really that important to give your kid a cell phone??  Almost all the kids have them now it seems like. :angry7:

My niece has one that has I think four buttons on it, which you can program numbers on it. There's not an actual number pad, so it's really only for emergencies. I think it's a really good idea for her to have it.

My teenagers all have one. It's a good way to help keep an eye (ear?) on them. I don't have to worry about them as much (you'll always worry).

I left my phone at home the other day (on accident) while I was at the store. I almost had a panic attack...lol. I don't know what we ever did without them.

i think those are the best for younger kids.. i didn't get my first celly until i was seventeen, a senior in high school ;p lol. i DO think that some kids are much too young for the responsibility of keeping up with one.. something emergency-only based is the best way to go, i think.

I think it all depends on the age plus you can get them a pre paid cell where every month you have to buy air time. That's the first cell phone I owned and I think its good for them to learn to use there minutes without going over board.

I don't feel that kids need a cell phone.  Most of them are not responsible enough to keep up with one.  The only reason that I would ever see a kid needing a cell phone is a teenager that gets their license.  You never know what could happen when they start driving.

Kids don't have anything important to talk about, therefore they do not need cell phones.  Most adults don't really need a cell phone either.  I only have one because I don't have a land line.

Get them the one where they can call 911, you, and a select few people without incurring a big expense

I'm thinking about getting one for my son when he is 12 or 13 so he can reach me when he needs me. I have a former dance student who is nine and has a cell phone and to me that's way too young. They need to be responsible first before they get something like that. Shoot, I didn't get a cell phone until I was in my thirties.  :cat:

:bootyshake:I have never even touched a cell phone much less own one.. I am 53 years old, and use a landline. I have lifeline, because I am disabled, and my bill is $5.50 a month. I save money by not paying for things that are not needed.

Its a great way to keep in  touch with your children but it can be expensive. I would buy just one for them to share
