I've had my computer go bad on me unexpectedly a few times.  Mostly as long as I can get it to boot in command mode, then it's hooking it up to a working laptop/computer and copy over all the files via line commands, then pop in the OS install disc to see if a fress OS installation fixes the issue.  If not, then it's hardware and either try to replace it, or get a new machine.  At least the data is preserved.

Of course, if you have your data backed up, or have taking full image backups of the entire machine - it would be much easier to reinstate.  The reason I like the imaging option is it saves all installed programs and other configurations which saves me lots of setup time if the issue was a bad hard drive.

That is why I back my stuff up weekly. Quite a few people do not do this and then when they have a problem, they have lost everything! If your not tech savvy, you can always just buy a service for about $60 a year and they will store your backup for you. It is well worth the $60 dollars to do this. I do mine locally and have a removable drive that I store all my backup's on. This way even if my machine blows up. I have my software and files that I need to restore, even on another machine if it takes that.

I have had not 1 but 2 computers die. Fortunately I had backed it up so it was just a matter of transferring the data from my external hard drive to the new computer.

I have important photos/documents in a cloud on the internet so I don't necessarily feel the need to back up my computer.  I always make sure I have
2 laptops at all times so I can access the internet on one if I'm unable to use the other one.

Basically, my back up is a separate laptop.
Have a great day!

I have been there before!  Several years ago my computer did basically the same thing....locked up and then ...FRIED...I lost everything that I had on there!   Now, I back up everything...I don't want to ever experience that again.

Run over it with my truck numerous times until its just smudge on the driveway.  I have a lot of inner hostility towards technology.

At work we have all sorts of imaging software to create clones of computers, so I have always kept a base image from the beginning of each year. I also put  easily recovered on a network drive or USB drives.

For my personal computer at home, I put my personal things (mostly pictures and music) on an external hard-drive. I actually have a 3TB external drive that is my main backup, and I also have a couple of 1TB external drives for my music where ones is what I use all the time and the 2nd is just a backup. However a lot of the stuff that I do on my personal computer is not really necessary for me to store as a backup... I don't bother backing up saved game files, for example. If my computer crashes and I lose that game's data, so be it... I can always re-install the game and start over. Plus more and more the data is actually stored in the cloud, so it isn't necessary to make backups as long as you retain the install disk. I'd probably say the same with my MP3s were it not for the fact that some of those files I obtained on-line (eg e-music, Amazon, etc.) rather than ripping from off of CDs (although I do have an extensive CD collection too, so I could always re-rip if need be).
