How Many Times Should You Brush Your Teeth Every day?
« on: March 07, 2014, 12:57:06 pm »
I brush my own teeth at least 5 times a day to remove plaque and food debris rom my mouth. I also rinse out my mouth with a sip water, switching it in between my teeth for a least 20 seconds. Or  chew sugarless or sugar-free gum when I am unable to brush my teeth in between meals to help prevent cavities. :D :D

1. When I first wake up in the morning.
2. After I finish eating breakfast.
3. After lunch
4. After dinner
5. Bedtime

I try to brush twice a day, but really I only brush once at night and maybe mouthwash in the morning.

O_o i only brush my teeth twice a day: when i wake up and before i go to sleep. i do chew trident gum after breakfast and lunch because brushing my teeth in the school bathroom would be so awkward.  ::)

Here's what my wife, who is a dental hygienist, tells me:

Brush twice a day (morning and evening)
Use a good power brush (Sonicare or Oral-B/Braun because they clean far better than a manual brush)
Never use anything but a soft brush (hard bristles will cause gum recession)
Floss every day (if you don't floss, it doesn't matter how many times you brush a day)
Use a floride toothpaste
Wait at least 30-45 minutes after a meal before brushing (eating increases the acidity in your mouth, so if you brush right after you eat you're basically rubbing acid all over your teeth -- which can damage the enamel)

I didn't see anyone mention flossing in this thread, but I have to repeat that it's as important as brushing. Don't worry if your gums bleed when you start flossing. The blood is because there are germs under the gums where your brush can't reach. It will stop after you've been flossing for a week or two. And flossing isn't done to remove food from between your teeth; it's done to clean biofilm from under your gums because that's what allows bacteria to breed and cause plaque buildup.

Normally you should brush your teeth twice a day. But I only do it once a day. I drink a lot of water throughout the day as an alternative.

I'm feeling a little guilty because I only brush and floss twice a day. I thought that was good until I read these posts. I guess I'd better start taking better care of my teeth.

I brush twice a day, once in the morning and in the evening before bed. In the evening, I also use a Water Pik to clean the gum areas and then floss and then rinse with mouthwash. I have pretty soft teeth, so I have to have a good regimen like this to avoid cavities.

If you're brushing twice a day and flossing once a day, you're good. Don't feel guilty. (I think your dentist will tell you the same if you ask -- especially if you're flossing every day. And don't lie to the dentist -- you're teeth will tell the truth.

If you're still feeling guilty, buy a good power brush. A pricey upfront investment, but power brushes do a much better job of cleaning your teeth.

And brushing your teeth right after a meal isn't the best thing to do.

Your brushing your teeth too much. I've heard that you should floss every time after you eat, but only brush your teeth in the morning and at bedtime. Too much brushing your teeth make your gums reside (go up). To be sure you should ask your dentist he's the best person to ask.

I brush my teeth twice a day...in the morning and before I go to bed. And after I finish brushing twice I floss afterwards.
