ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
« on: August 25, 2014, 12:15:17 am »
What does everyone think of this? My boss at work wanted us all do it b/c he had been challenged. I like the charity part and raising awareness but don't like wasting water. Everyone seems to have different opinions about this.

Patrick Stewart did a classy challenge too:  http://youtu.be/5vpbm7ehr_4
He sits quietly writing a check, pulls a bucket of ice onto his desk, and makes himself a nice, stiff drink.

While everyone else is dumping big buckets of ice water over themselves and screaming their heads off on Facebook, Patrick Stewart — aka Star Trek Captain Jean-Luc Picard — took a more refined approach to the Ice Bucket Challenge, which is raising money and awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) research.

In the video, Stewart sits quietly writing a check, pulls a bucket of ice onto his desk…. and makes himself a nice, stiff drink.

The viral fundraising campaign has raised more than $50 million so far.

Ha ha, yeah, that was funny, but I don't have $10000 to dump over my head (maybe $10?)! I haven't been nominated, but regardless of what you think of it, the campaign has been effective, no? I see nothing wrong with it, though some people are missing the point or going to far with the ice buckets (injuries? failures?)....I have seen some opposition to it, including some folks refusing to donate to ALS because they support stem cell research (instead donating to other organizations that support ALS without supporting stem cell research)...

I think it's kind of a crazy idea but it has certainly caught on and raised a lot of money for the cause so more power to it.

A very innovative way to earn money for a worthy cause. Wasting water id drought striken ares is not such a good idea though. They should have used something else.

I think it has make people of more aware of ALS, and it is fun for some to cool off.  It is very hot in some part of the country.  For those who can afford to donate thousands of dollars, do, but for those who can't  do the Ice Bucket Challenge and it's not hurting no one. :present:

Basically, I see the challenge has served its purpose - raising awareness of the charity and increasing donations as a result of all the publicity.  The challenge seems similar to a local charity that sponsors a "Polar Plunge" where people get donations for the charity to jump into a local lake in the middle of winter (near shore in a section where the ice was cut away).  The event is similar to this challenge - to raise awareness.

Gotta say, that was extremely cool. But he's an older, respected, and classy gentleman. I doubt it would be as viral of a challenge if people just poured themselves a glass of ice wine.

Doing a challenge in a good purpose is very nice. It makes the people more aware of it, my relative/friend died for multiple sclerosis and she is only 27 at that time. Donating a money for a good purpose and is a good deed.

I'm for anything that raises awareness and this challenge certainly did that.

It's certainly very popular but some (including my granddaughter) are rather upset about the water being wasted when in Africa they need water badly.  I can see her point but it surely has raised a lot of money for the charity.

I think it's a good idea.  It brought awareness to a terrible disease.

I live in iowa and our state only has 250 people that are afflicted with this terrible illness and one of them happens to be my aunt.  it is horrible to watch as she slowly deteriorates before your eyes she is almost to the point now where she has to be placed on a breath and feeding tube.  she can barely speak and basically has now become trapped in her own body.  i think that anything that raises awareness and hopefully a cure for this awful illness is great.
