New shows that get cancelled
« on: November 12, 2014, 10:42:16 pm »
I really don't get why TV stations give a new series like 4 episodes before cancelling them.  Perhaps they get more, but it just seems like so many really good series are cut for whatever reason right when they are starting to get good.  I don't get it.  I'm sure some of the great long running series that we have now wouldn't've survived if it was judged based on just the first few episodes.

It really makes me wonder why you'd cancel something so soon.  I hadn't heard of some of the shows that got cancelled this year and after watching some on recommendations from friends, I'm really annoyed to find out they are.

I agree that they don't give the shows time to mature and pick up an audience. I've heard Seinfeld was awful the first season, but look how that show matured and came into it's own.

I agree. With the new series, I think it takes some time before anyone can accurately judge how well it does. Some people wait until they've heard reviews and / or gossip from friends about the show. Sometimes it just takes a little bit of time to realize that the new series is beginning or to know when the episodes air and on what channel.

I am still upset with how Fox handled Firefly (even a good decade later)... Things like labeling it as an Action Comedy instead of a SciFi Drama, not airing the episodes in the intended order (making it difficult to follow the plot), preempting some episodes for sports, changing the schedule part of the way through the season etc.

I'm not fond of it, but the trend seems to be:  if a show doesn't have an audience in a big hurry it's time to replace it.

At the moment, I can think of two shows that I liked watching that just disappeared. Dark Blue and Breakout Kings. There's also a lot of shows that get cut off after one season. It's really annoying when good shows get cut prematurely yet there are so many things on television that should have never had a first season, or even a first episode!  :-\

Yes I agree. I have had many shows that I liked get cancelled on me. I hate how it always seems to happen  after a big cliffhanger. Thats the worst.

I take notes on new shows for a trivia contest and the contest owner loved taking notes on shows that were cancelled early as you couldn't find them anywhere.  I've noticed that trend where a show would be pulled after 2 or 3 episodes due to "low ratings".  The show "Emily's Reasons Why Not" was pulled after a single episode (just the premiere).

Most cases, I feel the pull was justified, as many are just plain awful where I wonder how the show got greenlit to begin with.  But others might be a bit rocky, but I see potential if they stick around long enough to find their footing and audience.  One like that was the only show this season that was dropped early - "Manhattan Love Story".  I thought from the previews that it would be an okay comedy, and I found it to be rather cute.  Unfortunately it was pulled after 3 episodes but the horrible show Selfie stuck around.

I was actually shocked that only one show was dropped - where I would have bet money Bad Judge would have been gone in a heart beat.  Then I found an article indicating that networks are finally changing how they determine viewership - they are now waiting for DVR and streaming statistics to compile before cancelling a show.  The issue is that it can take up to 2 weeks to get good data on the DVR and streaming viewership, so networks are starting to be slower on the trigger to cancel a show.

This change probably means we'll at least get a good half season of a show before it is pulled.

Most of the stuff now is crap, but I usually wait until a show survives its second season, then I'll watch it. I rarely watch new shows nowadays because TV is just boring anymore.

the commercials during a show help pay for the show. I am sure there is one more factor that I am not aware of that goes into a production for a TV show.
I do know there is a lot of money that goes into getting a show on the air.
A lot of sponsors are needed for financial backing.
