bonzie, I think that's a very big question.  When you love someone, whether you're a teenager or not, the inevitable "hurt" comes along sooner or later, and maybe more than once in a lifetime.  The best advice I can offer here is try to learn from the mistakes and go on until you find what your heart is truly looking for.

I am in my 60's and can still recall the hurt of that first love as a teenager.   I remember my mom thinking I was being silly.   My best advice, show support and let them know you understand, do not try and convince them it's not "real" love.

Losing at love is something we all go through,  and go through it we do.  And we are wiser for the experience.  Can't be afraid to love.

I am worried about my 15 year old grand daughter she has a very bright athletic future a head of her. She has already been scouted by a few collages for softball, but now she thinks she is in Love. I hope she doesn't get too overwhelmed and lose sight of the big picture.

Teenagers don't need to be in serious relationships there is plenty of time for that when they are older.  I didn't have my first bf until I was in college.  Teens should be focused on school having fun and activities not the stress of relationships.

To the teen-ager it is very very serious so it's best not to talk down to them about it.  They will find out someday it wasn't that important but it is important to them now.

Unfortunately I think all you can do is be supportive and let them learn and make their own mistakes but keep a watchful eye on them.

Life is about a person going through all this stuff; pain, happiness and sadness. You can't go through life without experiencing it all. All you can do is learn. I didn't have my first love until I was an adult and the pain wasn't any less because I was an adult. Although me and that person broke up over something dumb it helped me learn what I want or do not want for any forthcoming relationships.

Ditto on this, dreamyxo. Teens should focus on group activities and volunteerism. They should take the time to find the right person who shares their values and wants to live a life exclusively with one person forever.   :in-love:

Many, if not all, relationships where teens are dating and being alone with each other will lead to premarital sex, and most of those teens are not prepared to deal with the consequences of that choice, whatever those consequences may be.

I don't know how to avoid being hurt.  If you really like someone and they don't like you back then you are going to get your feelings hurt.  Just how it is.  If we are talking about a teenager that is not currently going thru this you are just looking for future reference I wouldn't borrow trouble.
