Thoughts on Pet Stores????
« on: August 07, 2009, 06:28:46 pm »
What are your thoughts on Pet Stores????????????

Should they sell Bunnies/Rabbits????????  I thought they were wild animals.

At a pet store by where I use to live got closed down because had decided to drowned two bunnies in water.  If you want to read more information about it and know about get on Google or any search engine and type in Akron Petland.

I am so disgusted with it all. And it breaks my heart really BAD.....

Never Buy Animals From Pet Stores or Breeders
They don't give  good veterinary care to animals and often sell sick and injured animals. They buy animals from places like puppy mills who are constantly being shut down and open right back up  becarse of the awful treatment and manner they raise the dogs in.  They live in small dirty crates with so many in one crate that they can hardly move. There is lots more to tell about this subject but I just can't stand to think about it let alone write about it.
But it is something everyone should know, and spread the word. Look up PETA's website. They explain it in detail.

i would think that these would be really good reasons
TO buy an animal from a pet store. you could give it a
much, much better home and really make a difference
for it.

...the drowning of the pets is just ridiculous. they
should have given them away for free, for crying out
loud.

I see what you are saying about pet shops, but I would much rather give the poor things a good home, and a vet check up, than to see them stuck there just to make a point.  Yeah they will eventually go out of buisness, but what about the animals in the meantime?  It is a catch 22.  I am tooo much of a softy to walk away.

If you don't buy animals from pet stores or breeders then where are you suppost to buy them? I know of this pet store in the Ocala Mall and they have little play pens for animals and they are not kept in cages which I love to see. I hate the thought of them locked in a cage.

Go to the humane society. They have a lot of orphan pets there that needs a home.

If people would refuse to buy from pet stores then they would be forced to stop providing an outlet for puppy mills, but having said that, if I get my heart set on a dog it doesn't matter where he comes from as long as I can give him a good home.  I have three rescue dogs and I would have more if I could.  They are a huge source of happiness in my life.

I think the only thing that may stop the widespread cruelty and mistreatment of animals is stiffer criminal penalties.  I believe that someone who will do something unspeakable to an animal is simply practicing their skills for use on humans.

I think its one of those cases where you have to go with what you think is best. Not all shelters take proper care of the animals they house; not to mention they can't always guarantee the animal's temperament. They're less likely to be outright cruel/negligent like retail stores and breeders, though.

My first dog I got from a breeder (I was a kid, so what did I know, right?). And she was fantastic. However, I've since gone to shelters for adopting other pets on account of finding myself volunteering there during the summers and getting to know many of the rescue groups that use the local shelter - a lot of the pets there have grown on me.

I do wish there were stiffer laws in regards to animal cruelty. I know in VA, they're trying to push for it, especially after that Michael Vic (sp?) fiasco.

I don't think it's fair to lump all pet stores together and calling them all bad.  The one pet store I know about near me is very upfront about all of their practices.  They have a regular vet who checks and vaccinates all the animals.  The animals are clean and happy when I see them.  I have never bought a pet from a pet store, but I would probably be open to it.  I would be open to adopting an animal from anywhere really.

Okay, not all pet stores are like that... I work at a pet store and we get our pups from well known local breeders, friends, and occasionally our own. We never buy from puppy mills. Soo I get really angry when people say that all pet stores are like that.. :BangHead:

Yeah, seriously not all pet stores are like this.

I got both my dogs from breeders & they're quite healthy!

Well I don't think all pet stores are like that.  That sucks that they did that though. The pet store that we go to sell everything except dogs.

I personally would adopt a pet from a shelter much faster than I'd get one from a pet store... It just seems like I'm doing more good for them that way. One of the cats I got was sick when I adopted him, which I didn't know at the time. It was a bummer but then by taking him to the vet and taking care of him I got to change things around for him that much more.

If we stopped buying pets like birds and hamsters where else can we buy them but a pet store. I havent seen dogs or cats at pet stores where i live but in order to get my fish i must go to a pet store to buy them. most shelters and humane societies dont have fish and small animals like that. So i will keep buying from pet stores
