Guns and the Crazies
« on: October 01, 2015, 02:59:52 pm »
In light of still another mass shooting today (Oregon) , you have to wonder what is to be done about the mentally ill and those with anger management issues getting guns.  I believe in the right to bear arms, but there are too many who seem to have issues responsibly having them.  I wish I had an answer.  However, too many innocent people are being injured or killed.  My support for absolute gun rights is starting to waiver.  More drastic controls may have to be found and enforced.

Per CNN, the gunman was online stating he was going to shoot up somewhere and the nature of some people was supposedly to egg him on to go ahead with it!  Can you imagine?  What is wrong with people?  Do you know we kill each other 297 times more than they do in Japan, for example?  There is definitely something wrong in this violent society.  Not only do gun control methods need to be addressed but so does the violence and acceptance of it.  Where is the value on life?

i hate that these kinds of things keep happening --i just wish we could have laws to prevent people with mental problems for getting hold of not just guns but any kind of weapon used to hurt someone else --i know wishful thinking but something has got to be done --we cant keep killing people

You have to ask yourself about the parents. There are so many of these kids who have something missing or this would not happen. We need to figure out what is missing. Then we can maybe fix the problem. But I still think there is something wrong with the parenting.

Gun violence, homicides, etc. are all down drastically from what they were 20-30 years ago. Blame the parents? Why?

My thoughts for whatever they're worth:

The gun laws that are in place work when they are enforced. Background checks are already required. FOID cards are required to purchase ammunition, and you need to take a gun safety class to get that.

Criminals will always manage to get guns in spite of any gun laws. They don't follow the law. That's why they're called criminals. They break the law if it does not suit their purpose.  :bunny: If they don't get a gun, they can drown, poison, strangle or stab someone to death. Guns are just quicker and easier.  :o

Making sure that a person does not obtain a gun when he/she is mentally ill is more or less up to the family and/or friends. We all should take some responsibility for our fellow man if we see a potential problem.  :notworthy:

A lot of Japanese kill themselves, guns  really are not the method there, but as as far as the guns, in the United States, we are a big country with a lot of wildlife, and crazy   people, but it is really the health care and the turning out of  crazies, that years ago would be kept locked up in an institution, instead of running around the streets as it is now.

There are homeless folks as well as unstable people running around, that years ago, would have been in treatment and way from the general public, to avoid harm to themselves and others. Not that way now.
I am Not saying everyone should be locked up that is mentally ill, only that we need better health care to serve those that need it.

Everyone in the united states has a right to bear arms, per the constitution. Do not place blame because a few  people do not know about guns or because they chose to use guns as a means to vent their anger.

I think we already have enough laws on the books, just need to enforce them....

Definitely no easy answer for this questions, but we have to also remember that there are people who aren't mentally ill that kill as well. Whether it's a spouse that wants to divorce or something silly. So it's really hard to say whether or not the person wanting to purchase the gun is someone that will harm others with it or use it for hunting. No easy answer.

America is a violent, aggressive, selfish society period.  People have no respect or reverence for life, not their own let alone other people.

. . . Ironically I just posted a gun reference under another thread listed "teens".  You bring up a strong point in regard to value of life.  It seems many don't understand that what they are doing is real.  There brains aren't wired like others.  I heard sermon once where a teen gunman was asked if he knew the difference between playing shooting games vs. what he did.  His response was chilling. "I didn't know they would die." The simple ability to distinguish reality for many has dissolved.

If there had been someone able to carry a gun into one of these areas, the people doing the damage could have been eliminated.  Most of the killings do occur in gun-free zones which is why these schools and universities are so often targeted.

I think a good way to start is to stop making guns. The laws will never change anything. >:(
