Thanksgiving Food
« on: November 05, 2015, 01:13:38 am »
Most people think of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes & gravy and pumpkin pie as Thanksgiving food.  They might even throw together the same recipes each year as their favorite Thanksgiving food is traditional.

Do you live (or eat) outside the box?

What do you consume on Thanksgiving day that might seem unusual to other people?

Are there specific relatives that you always have dinner with?

Do they bring the same dish each year?

Any funky choices like saurkraut for Thanksgiving dinner?  It's okay.  Let's get it all out on the table.  No pun intended....Okay, pun intended.

Last year I had Thanksgiving dinner with a friend and I cooked.  We didn't own a turkey so I made a really great meat loaf.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner this year.

I cook a good old fashioned turkey for Thanksgiving. I use a Gordon Ramsey recipe for the turkey which ensures it stays moist and flavorsome! I usually cook a 18-22lb turkey so it's important I keep it moist - I do this by adding a seasoned butter under the skin which consists of butter, olive oil, salt and pepper and chopped parsley with a little lemon zest. I smother the outside of the turkey with the seasoned butter, I add a whole lemon and two halves of an onion, two bay leaves and salt and pepper to the inside of the turkey and then bake for 20 minutes per pound at 400.

The only thing that we do that is outside the box is celebrate on the day after Thanksgiving instead of the day of Thanksgiving. We do this because our daughters usually celebrate Thanksgiving with their husband's relatives on Thanksgiving Day so they are not available. We do the usual foods, though: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, fresh broccoli and salad with coffee and pumpkin pie for dessert. It is usually a nuclear family affair but this year we will be having some unusual guests like a cousin from CA and my daughter's in-laws from PA.

Oh so love turkey-and the smell when baking. I had a friend that brought a largest whole sea bass you ever seen, the dish display was beautiful as well as delicious Always remember that.  Thanks for letting me remember a Thanksgiving memory.

It's a traditional Thanksgiving here.  Our stuffing is quite different, though.  Not the typical bread stuffing, which I can't stand.  We make ours with rice/ground beef/celery/onions/mushrooms and bread (toasted well and diced in to "croutons") salt/pepper and poultry seasoning then stuff that Turkey good on both ends!  We also "stuff" mushrooms and buy the large sized mushrooms for this purpose.

Since I don't have anyone in for Thanksgiving dinner and usually don't go anywhere, I just have a turkey sandwich and watch football.  I used to make the traditional dinner - turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing and a vegetable.

Since I live alone I've been known to make a chicken or pair of game hens instead of turkey, but I just want poultry for that holiday.  I'm planning to find a small turkey this year.  I save the big old fashioned turkey dinner for Christmas though.  :turkey:

This year for thanksgiving I just want to eat out like a pig. Just focus on family, eating and having fun even though all that preparation can be very stressful.

We do have some of the traditional Thanksgiving food, but we also have other foods. My mom has made meatloaf, and my brother-in-law has made cornish hens, beer-can chicken, and ribs before. I'm still trying to decide what to make besides mac and cheese. I love trying new dishes.
