When do you think is the best time to buy a watermelon?

When do you think is the best time to buy a watermelon? My best friends mom used to say when we were growing up that watermelons weren't good until after July 4th? Do you think that?

I would think that mid July to the first part of August would be a good time to buy a watermelon.  I have always been told the way to know if it is a good one is to thump it.

Whenever you can get good watermelon. In recent years I have seen watermelon through out various seasons. Some stores just keep it on deck.

I think anytime in the summer is great for watermelon!  To me; it just "tastes of summer"!!

I think anytime. Watermelon is delicious!  I typically buy the pre-cut ones throughout the year but whole watermelons I wait until Summer.

I love watermelon.  I like to find a heavy one that has a yellow spot on the bottom and that has a hollow sound when I thump it.

No idea, lol...I'm not a foodie...what's the way to tell if it's good? As long as it tastes fresh, it's fine for me (it's mostly water anyway)

Jkhanson has the right answer , thump to get a good hollow sound and look on bottom for a creamy bottom. Watermelons start showing up early here form Ca. and Mexico, but if i buy one i usually buy from the local farmers because it is fresher and sweeter.  I don't  buy one for me as i am allergic to it. But sometimes i will buy a good fat one to make watermelon pickles fo hubby he loves them. I find them too sweet and tart for me. I don't like pickles much, but hey if it makes him happy i will make them . He makes them last all year because i put them up in pint jars.
