The problem now is that you can't discipline your kids now because the Department of Social Services will get involved and the parents can be charged.  The kids know this and do everything they can to push the parent's buttons

Stealing is wrong, period, no matter what the reason.  He wasn't stealing food so he wasn't hungry and this probably wasn't the first time, just the first time he got caught.  They start off with small items and then move on to larger ones, really sad.

It depends on your situation sounds like a kid getting free christmas presents. Once in Kmart a woman was stealing baby formula she said she could not afford to buy it. The store banned her instead of giving her the formula. Her baby was with her seems sad and boo on Kmart a billion dollar company.

They should have banned her.  And pressed charges against her.  Why should the store give her free formula.  If you can't feed them don't breed them.  It is not Kmart or Walmart or the Grocery store or any body else's place to provide for your kid.  I guarantee the woman was getting welfare.  And Kmart is not a billion dollar company.  Most of their stores have closed due to bankruptcy.  That is the problem with this country.  People think they deserve to have every thing handed to them.  If the woman really cared if her kid ate or not she would get off her dead lazy butt and get a job and earn the money to feed her kid.  But no she is a socialist leech that wants the same as the working folks but doesn't want to get out of bed and work for it.

Well, not to be maudlin, but stealing is just a sin like any other sin. We're all capable of committing sin if we don't have God as our heavenly father. :angel11:

I know that sounds trite, but it's simply the best solution.

I've worked for retail stores and they all stress that you have to constantly monitor people for shrinkage (term they use for people stealing). Very sad, indeed.  :'( There's a high price to pay in more ways than one.

Being a Christian does not mean you do not sin.

unfortunately, this time of year is a "perfect" time for crime.
I heard this morning that a bundle of money was stolen before the employees of this facility could receive their bonus. These 100 employees were anticipating some financial help at the holidays and it was taken from them.

And now a report has come out about people stealing cars. The victims would go out to warm up their car and in some cases return less than a minute later to find that someone had taken their car. SMH

I am in no way implying that people deserve to have their cars stolen, but you gotta be smart about it.  I don't have a remote car starter and I rarely go out to warm up my car ahead of time.  But in this day and age, when I do warm up my car, I start it up and lock all my doors before returning to the warmth of my house with my spare key or key fob with me to re-gain access to my warmed up car.  It sucks, but it's what I have to do to make sure nobody steals my car.

If you leave a car unlocked and running -- it doesn't matter why you do it or that the possible negative result is just plain wrong -- you are asking for it to be stolen.  As I said, you don't deserve that result, but you certainly aren't doing anything to prevent it.

I worked for a large retail store and we would average about 600-800 convictions a year on theft. That is a lot. No telling how many more we missed. that includes hot checks and stolen credit cards.  Now it is even worse.   I do volunteer work at a charity  and last week  i gave a man his allotment of food and he sit it down to  get his clothing allotment, turned around and some one had taken his groceries, now that is the  worst . A person stealing free food when they have already taken their own .  We gave him another allotment. Now we have to caution them all the time to never sit anything down where they can't see it.  Someday i hope we catch that person stealing again.  The cops are always near.

I try to do this.  But once last year after I went back inside and tried to use to key pad to unlock my door it has frozen up and would not open the door.  Neither would the key my mom had.  So I start it and come back inside.  I also do not live in a huge populated area.

I started a part time job in retail on the weekends 3 years ago.   I could not believe how much people stole.  They bring their own box cutters and steal scissors to cut open what they  needed.  Very depressing.  This was electronics, ink, pens, pencils. tape.  paper, etc

Stealing is wrong. Period. It's a sad situation that this kid is stealing at 13. Pains me to imagine what his life will be if he doesn't turn it around. I don't feel sad, however when adults steal, especially from other people, and I'm not talking about food. I hate to see stories where someone's house or car was broken into. Those kind of people are just selfish and don't want to work the honest way. They're like a microwave. They want money now and don't care if they have to steal to get it.

It is not only at Walmart. People steal because they want something that rightfully belongs to another. In their sick minds, they steal for the thrill of stealing.

Thirteen is old enough to know not to take something from a store or any where that does not belong to you.  If he was 5 and he took a sucker then I can say okay he doesn't understand.  Stealing from a business is just as bad.  I have NO use for a thief.  And they are not stealing something they "need".  Even if it is food.  I have seen people stealing food that weighed 300 pounds.  They clearly were not starving.  A lot of times they steal steaks or even boxed foods and sell them at a flea market.  I have SEEN this myself.  There are soup kitchens if people are really hungry.  But they don't want that.  Well if you are hungry you will eat what is available.

Kind of veers here but a supposed homeless guy is standing near a gas station in my home town and has a sign stating he is hungry.  So a man buys him something to eat and takes it to him.  I kid you not he hit the person and told them he wanted money.  Well, at least he had a shelter to stay in for at least a few hours and possibly a meal depending on what time he got to jail.  haha
