Apparently my new no soliciting sign isn't doing the job
« on: April 11, 2018, 05:41:34 pm »
Ok I got tired of people coming through my neighborhood soliciting.  I think this one lawn care company misunderstood the sign I have on my door now that says "Please no soliciting".  Appparently they think that means its ok to put their literature on my stoop in front of the front door.  Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !  Do you hate it when people do soliciting at your house or do you just ignore them.

I don't mind people leaving literature.  I DO mind when they knock on my door trying to sell me something.

Our neighborhood calls the police on anyone who is going door to door. A large percentage of these uninvited visitors do not carry any identification and could be doing nothing more than collecting data on when people are or are not home. I do not call the police but, if I am motivated enough to go to the door, warn the intruder that within three visits the police will be checking in with them. The religion pushers are, generally the worst, as they feel that their freedom of speech is being taken from them. better that freedom of speech is taken in our neighborhood than a life at the hands of the many gun carriers.  Six houses that surround mine discourage all intruders with plaques that emphasize solicitors and religious personnel.  The neighborhood is currently fighting to stop unsolicited newspapers (coupon bundles/ community papers) from being thrown in our driveways. This is yet another way that criminals can determine when you are not home.

I don't have that problem where I live. I could see where it could get annoying.

Occasionally we have Jehovah Witness stop by and/or leave a tract in the door.  Otherwise, it is rare that someone knocks at our door to solicit something.

I don't count the neighborhood kids as solicitors when they are selling fruit or something for 4-H or band trips....

I usually never answer the door but on the off chance that I do ... my German Shepherd has enough of a hissy fit to leave a lasting impression and they don't usually come back.

I used to sell Avon door to door years ago. It got kinda scary. One man invited me in, and I took off. He chased me for a block.

Went to report the man to the police, and they kept mocking me saying "oooh, Avon calling".

Mortified, I quit.

It has gotten very different, and I won't go door to door for anything.  The world is a dangerous place.

In my neighborhood Jehovah witness people use to come around.  Now I just don't open the door.  If I don't know you and expecting you I don't answer

I think they think that means don't talk to me.  Not don't leave literature.  They probably don't look at the signs on your place any way.  Just run by and leave the paper and go on.  And apparently it doesn't apply to religious groups.

Seems like the signs don't mean a thing but when I ask to see the permit that they are suppose to have issued by the village they walk away.

Yeah they don't work.  I had one on my house & it people still came & knocked.

I have a RING doorbell now, & it is sort of funny now that I see the salespeople in action... I have noticed that after they ring the doorbell they move back down the sidewalk out of the focus of the RING...  I can still see them though.   One guy rang the RING then stood in front of it staring at it, I guess so someone would talk to him through the ring, or stood in front of it to be sure we could see who he was.     I've yet to speak to anyone through the ring like that lady with the RING security on TV.  It's more of a deterrent I think, then useful for practical purposes.  I still don't open the door, or talk to, solicitors that come to my door.

We have a little plaque on our porch that says "No Trespassing.  Violators will be shot.  Survivors will be shot again." that I put there as a funny but it seems to be working!  We were getting regular visitors from Jehovah's Witnesses (I think they stopped a lot because I debated their beliefs - I have been an Independent Baptist and have studied the Bible in detail for many, many years).  After the sign was put up, they told my husband they weren't allowed to come to our house anymore because of the No Trespassing sign.
Have a wonderful day!
