OMG! Hoarding is a disease now?!!!!

Yes, I'm a hoarder, you know when you're a hoarder when you watch hoarder shows, to make you feel better that you're not as bad as the hoarders featured on screen.

Now, I heard in the news that people who hoard, have some kind of mental disorder.

Anyway, does anyone out there know how to be cured of this this disease? Please let know, I don't want to be found in my death bed among my junk around & with probably my poor starving cats eating my decomposing dead flesh!

It depends how bad your problem is and how much you are willing to spend to get yourself some help. Usually with that the best treatment is counseling and support from friends and family. We all have the potential to be hoarders what makes a difference is how much you have to dig yourself out of your problem (literally) .

When we downsized, I realized I was an "organized hoarder".  A basement full of shelves with bins and bins of stuff (mostly arts/crafts).  I sold it all, and now, space limitations make me really think before making a purchase.  I'm not sure about hoarding being an illness, for me, it was more of a habit.

I think admitting it is a big first step then get friends and family to help. I big yard sale is a great way to get rid of a lot of it and then donate the rest.

It is not a disease. Neither is being on drugs. I get so sick of hearing all this stuff that people call a disease. That is a slap in the face to people who actually do have a real disease.

Keep stuff or don't.  The only way to get past it is to decide you are tired of the clutter and just throw stuff away.  I done that a few years ago but let a family member put a bunch of stuff here so I am now cluttered again. LOL

I can't see myself doing that, I am not exactly a perfect no mess person, but keep adding and adding stuff is a disease, I can't stand to see things clutter up, i have to move it, get rid of it if it's not used anymore.

It is not a disease.  That is part of what is wrong with this country. Idiot physiologists want to make everything a disease.

I do agree with you though.  Funny because people with a REAL MEDICAL CONDITION can't get a check!

Do not judge others! Mind your business! It is true- Some people are hoarders!
The reason- Some are “art collectors”...others are artists doing arts and crafts.
Hoarders usually resell these items to supplement their income.
Now you know why they are hoarders!

Well I am not surprised to see hoarding being called a disease because some of the extreme hoarding that I have seen on Television, something has to be wrong with a person to live that way, where there is no space to move and the refrigerator is stock with food that has been in there for months with mold.

Ok your post really tickled me the part about watching hoarder shows to make yourself feel better.  Ok my deceased husband was a hoarder and one of my sons and my mom was a hoarder but she hid hers better than some.  After my mom and husband passed I like to have never got rid of their accumlations it was truly traumatic.  I realized that I too had those tendencies and just really about got rid of everything so yes hoarders can be cured I think it depends upon the severity.  I still love the hoarder shows though.
