Deer in the Road
« on: October 29, 2018, 06:43:53 pm »
I live in a suburban community and lately there have been deer running everywhere. Every night is a near miss. Any ideas on how to avoid a collision (outside of not driving anymore :))

I was just reading about an attachment that you can attach to your car that gives off a high frequency sound that acts as a deer repellent -- I don't know how well it works, but I use a similar type one on the dog next door to keep it from barking & it always goes back in the house when I turn it on... but i'm not coming at it in a moving vehicle.

I live in a rural area where deer are common. I drive the speed limit and am very careful, especially at night. They travel in groups, so if you see one in the road there may be more waiting to cross.

You should contact wildlife police for help in dealing with this issue. Maybe changes should be done like lower the speed limit through these roads.

:pumpkin:   :pumpkin:   :pumpkin:   :pumpkin:  Drive slow and the deer hang together in packs, if you see one you might see another. They make a deer repellent for your car, unsure how well this works.   :pumpkin:   :pumpkin:   :pumpkin:   :pumpkin:

When man takes over their habitat, what would you expect? It's common to find them in our yard and garden, so encountering them on the roads should be no surprise. My wife has hit several in the 50 years we have lived in Oregon and I even hit one at 80 miles an hour on an Illinois freeway. The highway patrol told us it was common during rutting season.

Just keep an eye out for them, always look to sides, and ahead of you, deers usually will be standing on the side of the road, if you see them, blow the car horn, they will run back.

Where we live there are always deer around.  it's common to see them in our backyard and street.  Just drive slow and look for them, especially at dawn and dusk.

How much damage did you do to your car when you hit one going 80? I hit one when I slammed on my breaks (maybe doing 35) and was almost stopped when I hit him and it still smashed in my grill and I pulled deer hair out of the car for weeks. The deer just looked at me and bounded away.

I hit one on the Interstate and it totaled the car.  It was an old car so the total value wasn't high, but when the front end gets smashed, the hood buckles, the headlights get taken out and the windshield gets cracked, insurance totals it.

Three years ago my wife's new car was totaled because a deer ran into it. Ruined the steering, trashed the fender,/bumper and hood, through the alignment out-but the deer walked away. I took all kinds of defensive driving courses as part of some weekend stints as a stock car and demolition driver. One of the key points brought up was to continue driving through crashes/animals at the same speed. Veering one way or another would statistically have you rolling your vehicle, locking up your brakes could have a similar affect or have you run the risk of getting rear ended, and slowing down increased the chance of your strike causing the stricken object to fly in to your windshield. Two years ago I came across a herd of deer in an old jeep and ended up killing one. I lived.
