"Barbie"uncovers it all!

 8) :cat:

Anyone see this yet?  Barbie goes bald!  Fashionably!

This one is available only to certain kids though, read it here:

https://www.wthr.com/article/mattel-introduces-bald-doll-exclusively-for-patients-with-hair-loss

A new doll for kids is creating controversy and it's not even in stores.

The Mattel has added to Barbie's list of friends with a doll named Ella. Ella, though, will only be available to certain children.

Children's hospitals all over the country can order Ella to give to their patients. The doll has been specially made by Mattel after a national campaign convinced the company to create a bald doll, so kids with cancer or other kinds of hair loss would have someone that looks like them.

If you're a little girl with a prosthetic limb, alopecia or the skin condition vitiligo, there's now a Barbie doll that looks just like you.

The 2020 additions to Mattel's Barbie Fashionistas line are the company's latest nod to making sure its dolls reflect more of society's diversity.

and here:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2020/01/27/mattel-barbie-fashionista-dolls-diversity-bald-vitiligo-ken-hair/4554474002/

While a doll with a prosthetic limb debuted last year, this year's version will have a darker complexion. Another new addition has no hair. And even Ken has gotten an updated look, sporting long locks instead of his signature, short, sculpted coif.

"We’ve been committed to increasing diversity in our line and showcasing all the different types of beauty that exist ... making the line more accessible,'' says Lisa McKnight, senior vice president and global head of Barbie and its dolls portfolio.

That's just stupid about as stupid as me cutting barbies hair as a kid. Just leave Barbie with long hair.

They are not doing anything to "barbie".  It is a new doll.  With a different name.  Just made by the same company. Why would you care? Don't purchase it.  Problem solved.

I saw this a while back. I do not agree with it being only for "certain kids".  If they are going to make it then make it and put it for sale in the stores. Be done with it.

Why not make it available to al?  It would help people better understand and accept the reality of being sick? I wouldn't buy it but I don't like Barbie dolls and other Barbie type dolls.  Always thought that they were boring.

Tbh if they put it for sale alongside the others in the stores, I can't imagine there would be many sales so I doubt they would want to devote the shelf space to it. However I guess there would be something nice about having kids see that as an option even if they don't want to buy it.

I honestly think it’s a great idea.  Thankfully I have never lost a limb, but two bouts of cancer and losing my hair is enough.  If you are fortunate enough to have never gone through losing hair it’s a traumatic experience, even as an adult I can only imagine how bad and scary it is to a little girl.  Give her a Barbie with no hair and it will look like her and she won’t think there is no one else who looks like her.  I am not a vain person in the least but to watch your hair completely fall out is something I can’t explain the feeling.  Yes there are wigs, and I had 7, but that’s not the same.  I think this is a great idea for little girls.

LOL. Thanks for the laugh. I agree with your point.

I'm not sure we want to have our doll have the same disabilities that we have. I think most little girls want an ideal of perfection.  :in-love:

Kids with cancer and their hair has fallen out.  Kids with artificial limbs.  Kids in general.  And FYI they did make a fat barbie.  What difference does it make?  I honestly cannot grasp why anybody would fight about this but there are negative comments every where saying they should not offer this doll.

I haven't heard about this, but my initial reaction is that it's a good idea.  I think even the chidren who have friends or relatives with these issues might like to have a doll that represents our unique realities.

I respect matels business side but there ethics are spotty at best. But i can see if a kid who got a doll like this having the same condition it might bring them a little comfort. Comfort in the meaning that stuff like this does happen and its nothing to be ashamed of
