Making purchases in stores
« on: February 07, 2020, 08:10:13 am »
Have you ever had anyone approach you in a store and try to discourage you from buying a product you had just put in your shopping cart?

The other day I picked up a package of the Nestle bottle waters and this woman gets really upset yelling about all the reasons I should not purchase from that company.  Something about how they put poison in the water and just had to pay billions of dollars in fines.  :o ::)

Then gets off in to a bunch of other stuff that is too crazy to repeat.  This is the first time something like this has happened to me.  The only other remotely same thing was when I had a package of eggs and a man ask me if I knew there was a recall on that brand.  I said no.  I quickly checked my phone and he was right.  I thanked him and left the eggs there. lol.

The next question - would you approach someone you did not know and discourage them from purchasing from a company because YOU did not agree with ethical choices they had made?

They have just recently been fined  millions for poisoning water near some of their plants.  So I see why she was upset.  But I don't know if she just started yelling if I would pay attention.  She could have just calmly asked you if you knew what was happening I f she felt strongly about it.

No, because it is none of my business, but if asked I might...

Oh! To answer your question: I would only discourage someone from buying a product if I knew that product would harm them in some type of way, but even then I wouldn't be so hostile about it.

I had not heard about it.  She started off talking about something else as she was already getting gallons of water.  Something about how all the water around us was poison because it has a green tint she has seen before in some other area she lived in.  I was just like "oh really".  Then she got off on that when I picked up a case of the Nestle water.  All the companies are the same.  They all do things and some times they get caught and some times they don't.  Even if she calmly asked - I don't care.  I would have still purchased the product.

It's like Nike.  I don't buy their stuff but I am not going to throw away the shoes or shirts I already have that features their logos.  If you dig in to it all the companies are liberal and out for the dollar.

Right.  The second that I described...  He just asked did you know that product is recalled.  Uh no.  He told me where to find the info.  I looked and he was right.  WHY is this even on the shelf.  I put it back and got a different brand.  It was eggs.  I doubt I would even say anything. People are too offended by everything these days.  So I would probably just go on.  It would also depend on the person I guess.  If you knew something bad and approached me in a good way I would be more receptive.  I have put stuff back in stores before because of something I was told.

And I don't care how passionate someone is about their cause.  They do not have a right to shove it on some one else.  Like the PETA.  If you don't want to eat meat that is fine but you do not have the right to jump some one else for buying chicken.  I know someone who will go ballistic if he sees people using plastic straws in restaurants.  It is nothing to him.  If he doesn't want to use them then he doesn't have to.  But leave the people at the next table over alone.

So sorry that happened.  I have been reading some articles about this.  I don't think I would get right in someones face about it.  I wouldn't openly try to boycott a company this way.  I try to way the good with the bad, when making a purchase.  Even that's based mostly on price than any other concerns.

I would do what the man did to you country girl.  Calmly and quietly ask if they knew it was recalled .  Bottom line if they still chose to buy it, I’m not going to yell or scream, it’s their decision and choice.

In a situation like a recall it is different.  This woman was upset because she disagrees with the practices of the company I was purchasing from.  Fact is they are all the same.  Some just have not got caught.

It is like people who boycott Nike.  I rarely buy Nike because I personally can't afford it.  A few years ago I got a really nice pair of tennis shoes marked down to around $30 to $40.  They originally were over $100.  I only wear them for good if I am going some where nice.  And when they get dirty they can downgrade to every day. lol  I am not going to throw clothes and shoes away because of some poor choice the company makes.  And if you research all the people who work and run these companies you will find there are people who hate America, disrespect the flag, make negative comments on social media, are gay or lesbian, transexual, and every other thing that some are exposed for.  It is at all of the companies.  They all push the envelope as far as they can and get by with as much as they can.  So basically it doesn't matter who you purchase from.

So sorry that happened.  I have been reading some articles about this.  I don't think I would get right in someones face about it.  I wouldn't openly try to boycott a company this way.  I try to way the good with the bad, when making a purchase.  Even that's based mostly on price than any other concerns.

Maybe I should look in to it because I am kind of interested.  I know years ago the CEO of Nestle did make the statement that if you cannot afford to purchase clean water you do not deserve to have it.  I do not agree with that statement. He is horrible for feeling that way.  But like I said all these companies are the same.  Some just get exposed for things they do and others are better at flying under the radar.

These days a lot of people are doing the best they can to get by.  The economy may be "booming" but still in my area yes there are "jobs every where" but it is a min wage ($7.25 an hour job that is part time consisting of 10-12 hours a week).  A lot of people cannot afford to pay 3 times the price for a different product.  I buy the flavored Nestle waters.  They are affordable and they are tasty.

I am pretty sure this lady is one of the "preppers".  She said enough to let me know how many hundreds of gallons of water she has stored on her property.  I wasn't upset just kind of let me thinking.  And I wondered if anybody else had a similar experience.  I told a woman once something she was buying had been recalled.  She seemed offended and bought it anyway.  I just went on.  By the next day all of that item had been pulled from the shelves.  Our Walmart WILL NOT pull from the shelf until they get a notification from head quarters.  Even if it is all over the news.

I wouldn't pay much attention to someone who started screaming and yelling at me to put a product back but I would listen to someone who calmly tells me why I should not buy something. I would just think the former type of person to be some kind of a crazy person.
