...what's your ROLL on turkey day?
« on: November 20, 2009, 10:22:33 pm »
so, i've offered to cook thanksgiving dinner this year.
now that thursday is getting closer and closer, i'm
getting a bit nervous  :o

i've never cooked a turkey in my life! i didn't realize
how big of a task i was taking on. i've been looking
up how-to-turkey videos all day and editing my
grocery list a dozen times.

any advice will be appreciated  ;D

so, what's YOUR role on turkey day?

Some ways to save time and money with Thanksgiving that might help you are the following:

1) If you have a crockpot consider having a large turkey breast cooked over night in the crockpot. This makes a very tasty and juicy bird. You can also use the drippings to make  gravy. Using the crockpot for the turkey keeps the oven free for other things.

2) Consider cooking your pies a day or 2 ahead. Frozen pies have come a very long way and are very good alternatives to  from scratch pies as they not only save time when you have many other things to cook but can also be cheaper when you combine sales+coupons.. You can get very good deals on pies this time of years and there is even a printable coupon for the sara lee (any frozen dessert) that can be found here (as well as many other coupons for thanksgiving) : http://www.fusioncash.net/forum.php?topic=9959.msg111401#msg111401

3) I like to make my own rolls but the heat and eat rolls are very tasty, quick and inexpensive !

4) Many things such as twice baked potatoes and can be prepared ahead of time and put into the oven soon before time to serve.

I know it isn't much but since this is your first hostess attempt I hope it helps!

thanks for all of that! and the coupon links.

i think managing my time wisely is going to be the t
trickiest part. that, and i'll be working with a rather
old stove. i wonder if i should start super early, that
way i'll have a few hours to mess up? haha.

I always go to my Mom's in TN, but there was one year that we had Thanksgiving early at my house with the rest of my family that lives close to us.  Boy that was a job, but we had a great dinner, and some of the other family members brought food.  The way that I always fix a turkey is on 350 and I turn the turkey up side down because the meat is jucier that way.  It usually takes around 4 hours to cook.  I can't rememer how you are suppose to measure the time to cook by the pounds.  Good luck and I hope you have a great Thanksgiving.

I have a huge family that celebrates Thanksgiving, so alot of the grandmothers & aunts do all the cooking, while the rest of us fill the role stuffing ourselves lol.

I usually end up cooking almost everything, my mum and grandmother and uncle do a few things to help, like make gravy or find bowls and serving spoons etc.. Though out of all the years I've hosted Thanksgiving at my house I've never been allowed to cut the turkey... I think I'll have to wait for a LONG time to be able to do that. I cook the thing I don't see why I can't cut it =
