Diabetic dog
« on: April 01, 2013, 10:59:26 am »
One of my dogs was diagnosed with Diabetes back in November 2012.  She's still pluggin' along but tends to get other illnesses along the way such as urinary tract infections.  Now she has severe diarrhea (tmi, yeah, I know), so I have a call in to the vet to see if I need to bring her in today.  She is on Humulin, 12 units 2xday and Proin, 50 mg 2xday.

Anyone else have a diabetic dog or have had one in the past?

My sister's friend has a diabetic cat.  She been giving her shots for over 5 years, and the cat is doing fine.

I used to house sit for some people who had a dog with diabetes.  I had to give the dog insulin shots twice a day.  It also took a heart pill and a cancer pill and got drops in one of his eyes.

My dog isn't in too much pain, really, and the vet said she'd go blind (the dog, not the vet - tee hee) but the dog can see fine at the moment.  When things get bad, we will put her down as we don't want her to be in agony.  Hopefully she's got a couple years left in her.  We've had her since she was 7 weeks old.

I guess I have been lucky! none of my dogs or cats have been diagnosed with diabetes. I have had 6 dogs and 3 cats over the years and not any of them had diabetes. To tell you the truth, I have never heard of a dog getting diabetes. I guess it is rare in animals. Much more than in Humans, or I have been just lucky.
