Education for retired or senior citizens
« on: April 23, 2013, 07:44:13 am »
Just wondering how many senior citizens out there have gone back to school to further their education.  And what are you studying.  Online or actually going to college?

I will be a new senior citizen in less than four and a half months.  I am in school right now.  I have five more courses to my graduation in January 2014.  I am majoring in Accounting and taking a minor in Information Systems.  I have taken my entire course online.

I would like to go back to school but I hate the thought of going out in all weather again to attend classes. I never thought about doing it on line. I'm going to look into that.

I am not a senior yet, but I want to go back to college soon.  I think it is a good  for a older person to go back to school.

I just turned senior, maybe I'm lazy, but I worked all my life, raised my kids, went without so they could have.  They all went to college, which we paid for, got married and have families of their own.  Now it's time for my husband and me to do what we want when we want.  No getting up 5 days a week at 5 am, working 5 sometimes 6 days, being too tired to enjoy life.  Now it's our turn to live, so no I do not plan on returning to school or even working again!

I am a senior and the only education I am interested in is Online Marketing, but I have spent countless hours studying the concepts and practices that allow me to survive in this economy and I will be eternally grateful for that.

Nancy5, I agree with you I am a senior citizens and I have done the same, but I was thinking about go back to school for a whole differ major, but after reading your post it makes a lot of sense. Why?  Life is too short to just work, work all the time.

Gunter, I did think, only for a second, about going back to school, but then I knew working was out of the question for me, so I changed my mind.  I would rather just enjoy each day, do what we want, or just do nothing if we want.  I have no idea how long we will live, or what health issues may come up, so we are just enjoying retirement and each other!

I got my degree years ago and have worked for years.  Now as a senior, I like the idea of no obligations.  However, I do enjoy learning  :)  I feel at home in the classroom.  If I could find something interesting in a time slot that was comfortable (not nights) for me, I would definitely consider going back to school.

I got my Associate's Degree at 64, going to night classes.  I am now 70 and still would like to get my Bachelor's, but that would probably be mostly online and if I can find the money to do so.  It was always a dream of mine to get a college degree.  I had the inscription "My Dream" inscribed on my class ring.  I love learning.  To me it is not a chore.  I would even like to go to day or night classes again, but my arthritis and fibromyalgia prohibit getting around easily, especially up and down stairs.

Wow I would like to find our if there is some free education out there for seniors as one post stated their family member did.  I'll have to look into that.

I have thought about it! I know some state's give Senior Citizens either free or very little cost for Tuition. I would like to go back just to finish my BS. I went for almost two years and am just shy of a AS. I would have to check with my state to find out if they have any programs for senior citizens.
