Leaving the Computer On
« on: August 04, 2010, 07:54:07 am »
My son likes to watch Nick Jr. online but he will watch it for like 20 minutes, then play for 45 minutes, then he will want to watch Nick Jr. again.  Should I turn the computer off for those 45 minutes to save energy/money or just leave it on sleep mode or something?

they say it is not good to turn the computer on and off again.  Once ours is on we leave it on for the rest of the day.

My computer is on 24/7 even when I am on vacation away from home. Turning it on and off stresses the components as they cool and heat and the power saved would be like a 100 Watt light bulb. Beside s, I use remote control to use my home computer from my laptop while I am away.

I have been leaving my computer on 24/7. But, the other day, my CPU fan clogged with dust and nuked my duo core Intel, so now, I am running an old AMD and mainboard. So, I would suggest using a can of compressed air to blow dust out of your CPU fan periodically.

I leave my computer on all day and just shut of f the monitor to save power.  I never know when I will want to jump on Fusion Cash and check to see if Kohler is having a promo. :bootyshake:

You definitely do not want to be turning the computer on / off all the time. It hurts not only the motherboard, but also the battery life of the computer (if it's a laptop) greatly diminishes. I would recommend putting it into a low hibernation state, you won't save that much energy / money just by turning off the computer for 45 minutes.

That had me quacking up!! Good one!!

I too leave my computer on 24/7, it automatically goes into sleep mode after like 15 minutes or so of non use.

I leave mine on and let it go to sleep when I'm not using it...but a word of warning if you have a webcam: people can remotely access it if they know what they're doing so turn it off when you're not using it, and as an extra measure, turn it to a wall...just the thought of someone spying on you or your kids....

I leave my computer on all day and turn it off when I go to sleep. And I do that 'cause my room is the warmest room in the house and especially with it being summer my computer overheats.

I turn it off when I'm not using it.   I heard that leaving it plugged in 24/7 isn't good.

I turn mine off every night unless its running a defrag or something like that, that's going to take a long time to do.  I use this computer for my work and I always turn it off when I'm done using it.  Especially if a thunderstorm hits can't take a chance on losing my hard drive info or anything else with this baby. I turn it off and unplug if a bad storm. My first computer lasted 7 years doing the same thing over and over so I'm not sure on that or not.   :cat:
