Many people point out that according to the Bible God established day and night on the first day, yet it wasn't till the 4th day that God created the sun, stars, and moon.  It is my position that God was the light of the world in the beginning and that it was divine light that was in order till the creation of the sun, stars, and moon.  There is a plethora of Bible verses which refer to God's light and verses which state that those who are in darkness will never understand the light.  Of course if you believe the earth came from a non created blob which exploded and created order and life from disorder and the inanimate then that makes total sense and your cognitive skills are without question.
Isaiah 60:19
The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the Lord will be your everlasting light.
Revelations 21:23
And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
John 9:5
While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
