degradation of pop music today
« on: February 23, 2013, 09:10:10 am »
I don't know about anyone else, but with the exception of Kelly Clarkson, Kelly Osbourne, Orianthi, Avril Lavigne, and Psy, I absolutely hate today's pop music. someone needs to tell Madonna "hey 1983 called, it is missing its prostitute". now I know why other countries hate us, because of Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears, Beyonce, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry, who forget to look at what they are wearing before they leave their house.

Music has definitely changed in this country. There was a time when rock & roll, blues and rocks had different beats, but had a message about everyday life. These moden day performers have no morals at all. Parents, beware of what you let your kids listen to.

You have to remember who most pop music is marketed to...10-14 year olds (mostly girls).  That is the #1 target demographic for major record labels.  That is the group who buys the most music.  My point is that most of the music that is targeted to that demographic is not going to be good music.

However, there is a lot of really wonderful music being made today.  Most of it is made by independent musicians and not targeted towards any specific demographic.  The problem is that you are not likely to hear very much of the good music of today when you turn on the radio.  Whatever type of music you like (maybe other than disco), I will guarantee that someone is making right now that is at least nearly as good as your favorites.

This won't hit everyone's musical tastes, but I think bands like Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Wilco, Andrew Peterson, Andrew Osenga and many others are making really important music right now.

And people who have been around for a long time like Paul Simon, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and others continue to make some fantastic music.  It might sound different from when you last heard them, but that doesn't mean you can't get into it after really giving their music a chance.  I know people in their 60's and 70's who loved Paul Simon's album "Surprise" which really pushed the envelope but is also probably one of my favorite albums of the last decade.

The stuff on the radio and on award shows might be terrible, but good music lives on.  You may just have to look for it a little bit harder.

pop music started to "die" in 1999. I liked the early 1990's music with En Vogue, Right Said Fred, B-52's, Duran Duran, Arrested Development, and others. in the mid-90's En Vogue became EV3
as one of their members dropped out. by 2010, pop music is laying on the morgue table still playing. the B-52's and Duran Duran need to continue to appeal to a younger audience while at the same time, keeping their music at a level consistent with their names. Rozalla is another one that needs to come back and show the younger people what music really is. however, it is good to see that the boy bands broke up. the only member of one of the boy bands keeping a social life is Justin Timberlake.

I don't like it and i think it sends the wrong message to our younger children. At least when we grew up the music did send a message but not *bleep*. and it is so loud and noisey thet i don' see how they understand it, let along the way the stars dress. It is disgusting.

Like everything else in this world now, it is all commercialized and purely money motivated. There is good music being made but one has to look to the non-commercialized artists.

Music is not wat it used to be...
Opinion: 1) a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter 2) belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge
This is the internet, learn to let people have opinions. And don't be so sensitive.  8)

No it's not.  I got away from mainstream music a long time ago because it's junk! If I do listen to a mainstream hit, it's something pre-2000s just out of reminiscence.

I started listening to metal and hard rock at age 14. aside from Kelly Clarkson, Kelly Osbourne, Orianthi, Avril Lavigne, and Psy, I question the rest of pop music. sometimes I question
Psy, as there is a guy dancing above him in an elevator. I wish some African performers, such as Kasaskie, would come Stateside, and get on the Top 40. I cannot post videos
here, but he and Jay Mazive got together to do a "Gangnam" parody called "Naija London Style", and then he teams up with Latifah on "Ejekajo 3X". most of the African performers are
well covered up. Rozalla, one of the first breakout stars from Africa, is the exception as she wore short shorts on stage. on to Kasaskie, there is a video of kids dancing to "Ejekajo 3X",
and there is a tiny bit of Azonto in their dance, despite Kasaskie being from Nigeria and the UK. it is sad to see "Gangnam" slowly fading away, and the Harlem Shake will soon take its place,
but what the US needs is a bit of African culture dances, such as the Azonto.

I don't care for most of the "pop" music that is being produced now,  but as was pointed out earlier,  it isn't really being made for my demographic group (40's male).  I do like the recent trend of the more "folksy" music that is topping the charts lately.

I hate some of the music that was mentioned -- especially Nikki Minaj and Byonce (or however it is spelled)

While I am disheartened at the lack of role models for our young people, and I am in no way defending the music with no morals or redeeming factors.

Remember when Elvis was considered too sexy and rock and roll in the 50's and 60's was accused of corrupting our children?   I wonder if our parents felt the same way about our music as we feel about the new music?

Celebrites should never been anyone's role model. I'm sure back in the day people were complaining about Marilyn Monroe or Elvis Presley not being good "role models".  They are humans nothing to idolize.
