My 22 year old is a recovering 'H' addict, he's in jail right now because of his addiction. I've tried to stop smoking so many times and I have Asthma and COPD...addictions are strong and hard to break. I have a bottle of Chantix here and I'm scared to try them. It's silly, really, not too scared to die from some lung disease BUT too scared to try a little pill that might help me. Go Figure.

PMZ, I am proud of you too.  Quite an accomplishment and a blessing.  jusu, if you decide to take the Chantix, I would suggest that you just keep a log of how you are feeling and ask those around you to tell you if they think they see a change in your mood.  Chantix worked great for me but many people are afraid of it and I understand that completely.  I have a tendency to have depression, so I just made sure to kind of inventory my moo everyday.  I quit smoking after the 4th day and then took the Chantix only about another week after that and then got off.  I felt like by that time the physical craving was behind me and I was only dealing with the mental addiction.  After that it I was resentful for about two month.  By that I mean that I still wanted to smoke but I knew I couldn't go back to it, so I felt like something had been taken away from me.  Slowly I forgot about it and now at four months I am so glad I quit and no longer wish I could smoke.  And since I got a new car and it smells great!  Best of luck whatever you decide.

stay busy - active. find a friend who will walk or go to the gym with you. someone who will support you during withdrawals. set goals: complete a 5k or the $ saved will go to a vacation or some other splurge. good luck.

samrhett2...Good for you! I love reading your post. You have not only inspired me BUT I'm going to start the Chantix today. I'm so ready to quit but scared of what I've been reading. I know people say just use will power BUT they don't get it. Thank YOU so much for the positive info. I'll watch for the depression, I'm basically alone, no family, friends, so I'll just keep track of how I'm doing mentally. Thank you again, you really helped me.

jusu, i wish you the best of luck in quitting. i have never been much of a smoker so i don't know how hard it really it is, but i've seen my parents quit after smoking half their lives and i've seen that it can be quite a struggle. i pray that you stay strong and get through it!

to anyone else trying to quit, i wish you strength and good luck!

to those that have quit, congrats!

Thank You. I just took the Chantix. I never thought I would find so much support from such good people like I have on this forum. Tell me if my posts start to get rude or crazy...

There is also some gum you can buy. It's supposed to keep your mind off smoking.

God I wish I could help but I cant even quit myself, so I'm not going to give you any bogus advice. You need to do whatever you feel is going to work, everyones different.  :dontknow:

jusu,

You are very welcome.  The thing that I like about Chantix is it says to take it and then continue to smoke.  Then you can cut back gradually and I really did not have a hard time doing that.   I didn't want a program that said, ok you have to stop right now and never do it again.  I couldn't have handled that.  I hope it takes the awful craving away for you like it did me.  I don't exactly remember but it seems to me that the instructions said not to use the gum or the patch with Chantix because they are still a form of nicotine and the idea is to get you completely off.  Best wishes.  I hope to hear how you do.  I really thought I would never be able to quit.

I CANT STAND THE SMELL OF CIGARETTES AND STAND THE PEOPLE SMOKING. I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE DO IT ANYWAY. IT DOESNT DO ANYTHING FOR YOU AND YOUR BODY.

Agreed and well said

smoking simply exposes a weakness in discipline

i know because i used to have it

I've been trying not to think too much about the chantix since I took it, so I don't freak myself out about it. I do like the fact that you can still smoke with it and it seems like the cigs. are starting to taste a little 'off' I can't explain it. I've only had 6 since this morning...compared to at least 10 by now. Really bad upset stomach...? It's worth it if I can do this.
