Who taught you how to cook?
« on: October 14, 2011, 09:27:36 am »
Did you learn from somebody else or on your own.  I had never cooked until I got married.  The good old Betty Crocker cookbook was my teacher.  I even learned to bake bread from scratch from it.

I would have to say a little of both. I watched my mom but her being a single mother I did learn things on my own.  She would always get these odd hours at work so when I was about 16 she would leave me home with my little brother and I would have to make us dinner usually, Now on the days she was home or had to work latter hours she would cook.  But once I got the basics down than I started making the recipes out of books or off the internet.

My mom taught me how to cook the basics.  We had meat, potatoes, vegetable and dessert for most every meal.

I also took Home Ec in High School.  I learned more there....fancier dishes.

My Norwegian neighbor lady taught me how to make Lefse so I make that every Christmas.

I learned how to cook from my mother and grandmother.  I watched them all the time and after a while you just start experimenting on your own and you become a better cook that way.  You get the basics from family while you are growing up and than when you get old enough you start doing and trying new things on your own.

I don't really know. I guess there were some things I learned from my parents although they didn't have much creativity with meals. A lot of processed food kits that you mix a few ingredients and cook. I have learned a lot more in a food kitchen as well as my own experimentation. I also like to try and copy what I like about restaurant foods and try and make them at home. They aren't always a masterpiece but at least I try to be a little creative with my food.

I learned from my Mother, my Grandmother, and from my Mother in law. I also taught my self a lot from cook books or just experimenting.

It was a combination of life experiences, some cooking when I was young, took girl scouts had to earn a cooking badge. Later I worked at a hospital in the kitchen and that required a course in institutional cooking.  Worked at some fast food places that required a food handlers permit, learned some good stuff with that one.  I also had the Betty Crocker Cook book that I used occasionally, for baking recipes.

Fannie Farmer

My mom was a simple cook who didn't experiment.  She is a fearful person and always worried about my long hair.  I seem to have absorbed a knack for a good pie crust, but not much else.  :(

My ex-mother-in-law taught me a bit about making jelly and jam.

I learned the rest from cook books and cooking shows.  I've experimented quite a bit too.  I'm a scratch cook and baker.  I've made bread and pastries, even decorated cakes.  I don't mean to boast, but I am rather proud of this accomplishment.   ;D

Note:
On Swagbucks they have cooking videos.  There's a category called Redoux that has short videos that teach about an ingredient, tool or technique in each one  They are very informative and you get credit for watching.
