My son and his family are going on a cruise this December. I am thinking about getting a cabin for me as a goal along with them. But it cost us much for one person to go as it does who people to go! I was wondering if any of you have ever went on a cruise and shared the cabin with somebody you didn't know to cut the cost down? And how did it go? Did you go with the same sex or different sex part us sharing the cost of cabin?

Hmmm.  I didn't know you could do that.  I have never been on a cruise and don't ever plan on going on one.  I think I'd be woozey and sea sick the whole time.

Honestly, I do not think I would like that.  You don't know who the person would be or if they would steal your stuff or kill you in your sleep.  Maybe I have watched too much tv or seen the love boat too many times. lol.

I have been on a cruise and you don't really realize how small the cabins really are.  If you remember the Love Boat, that's not what they look like.  You have very little room and the space between the single beds is just a small nightstand.   I would never share a cabin with a person I didn't know, whether it was on a cruise or in a hotel.  You have to be so very careful now a days.

I have been on many cruises, but always with my husband. I know that you can ask the cruise line to pair you up with someone...they always pair women with women and men with men, but in this world today I don't know that I would trust the chance of who you were paired up with. As stated by others you don't know if they would steal from you, kill you etc. For me the savings wouldn't be worth the anxiety of wondering about the potential cabin mate.

No I haven't and I don't think I would want to either. Those cabins aren't that big and they are hard enough to share with someone you know.

I know I wouldn't be brave enough to share a cabin with a stranger. You could get lucky and have it work out but it would be a VERY uncomfortable (if not dangerous) situation if it doesn't work out.

I have been on a couple of cruises but never solo.  I can tell you a freaky cruise story from when my high school BFF and I went on a cruise.  Compliments of her Dad for her graduation present in lieu of a party.  She was 17.  I was 18.  A "manager" of housekeeping was following us from one club to another bar buying us drinks.  It took us a while to figure out who this was.  After a couple of nights out at sea he came clean.  Later that night/early a.m. hours while we were sleeping - an alarm we kept under the door went of.  The only way to set the alarm off was for a spring to release...so in other words the door had to be opened to move the alarm so it could sound.  I can't imagine what would have happened had that thing not gone off.  It was deafening and certainly drew attention.  Our hunch was that the same guy who has keys to all the cabins as house keeping manager... tried to get in.  Moral of the story.  Trust NO ONE.

I've never done that before, and I don't think I could... maybe try to find a friend who's willing to go along? (and maybe pay for it of course haha)

The cabins are very very small as others have mentioned.  I would never share with someone I didn't know.  It was bad enough with a good friend as there is hardly any room to move around.

I have never been on a cruise.  After reading this thread, I do not think I would share the cabin with anyone but my family or very close friends.

Get adjoining cabins & share your cabin with your grandkids.
Or get a 2 bedroom suite cabin, where you all can be together.

On a cruise you don't spend too much time in your room, but to share it with someone you don't know would be slightly awkward if you did.  You could leave your passport & valuables in your son's room where it would be safe.

I've traveled around Europe in my youth using hostels, & it wasn't too bad sharing rooms with people you don't know - you're really not in the room except to sleep & store your stuff, remember they are in the same situation as you are.  It's all what you get used to.

I couldn't agree more! Back in the day, you could trust people...more so women. It's definitely not that way anymore. Women are getting just as violent and crazy... :sad1:

I agree also. I am just not trusting of others.

Well have not done that as I have never taken a cruise - however my mother took several and one she shared a cabin with someone she didn't know and the rest she shared with traveling companions - she didn't like sharing with someone she didn't know but my mom was kind of a private loner type of person.  I am very sociable so it probably wouldn't bother me.  Well good luck with it and hope you have a wonderful time regardless.
