What do you like about being single?

I can do what I please when I please.
I can spend my money how I want.
I make my own decisions.
If I want to pick up and move across the country tomorrow I can do what without having to worry about someone else.

i had been single 20 years decided to get my kids raised and out on their own before trying to date again so this year i took the plunge and got into looking around its very hard after being alone so long i am with you on the you can do what you want when you want and not answer to anyone ! but then i met a wonderful man and we are now engaged and im learning to share my time and learning how to let down walls i had built around myself !

I am single although I don't feel single.  I still watch grandkids so the parents can work.  I am looking forward to being single.  I hear its great at this time in life.  Being able to do what you want when you want.  Looking forward to it.

I'm with you.  I like not having to answer to anyone but myself.  Of course it gets lonesome sometimes, but I don't have to listen to anyone's mouth about what I do and how I spend my money.

As people have alluded to...its the freedom. I mean...it seems much more valuable than I think people want to admit.

I don't feel trapped or imprisoned by marriage. We do want we want, sometimes alone, sometimes with friends and sometimes together. We can spend our money on the things we want and sometimes that means compromise.  I always have a dining companion, traveling companion, hiking companion, gardening companion and I always have a friend.

I can do all of these things, and I'm married!   

So can i, well maybe not the moving but if I really wanted to live someplace else we would seriously discuss it, and who knows what WE would decide.

I can see the case for being single, and I was single for 34 years. It was nice being able to do whatever I wanted to do when I wanted to do it. I do love being married, though (24 years), because my husband is my very best friend. Both our kids are in college now, so we get to spend a lot of quality time together. We were friends before we ever became romantic, so it's really nice to go out and do things as a couple, and it's also nice to stay in as a couple. I guess when we made the decision to get married, we knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. So I guess it's kind of a trade-off.

After living single for 30some years (although granted that many of those years were as a child and subject to parental authority) - I have to say I feel bad for anyone who feels that the single life is preferable.  I am not saying that I  disagree but am saying that I feel bad that you/they haven't had the blessing of spouse/significant other who allows you the freedom of single life in conjunction with the security of committed relationship life.


Now by "freedom of single life" I am not talking about the freedom to sleep around or be foolish with your decisions and finances without nagging repercussions...


I feel sorry for anyone who has been made to suffer at the hand of a spouse who is abusive, selfish, or unloving. Single life is definitely preferable to being in an abusive or manipulative relationship; but married life of equality and true love and honesty is far preferable to single life.

I was with you all the way with no doubt like 7 months ago!  That is the funny thing about it.  Now I cannot imagine my life without my girlfriend.  I love my time with her.  But that is not to say that I don't appreciate the freedom a single person has.  Your points are so very valid.  You do have more freedom for those things when single, by nature because there is nobody to give you a differing opinion as you said!
