A good homemade heat application can be made easily and inexpensively from an old work sock and (unpopped, dry) popcorn or dry rice:  fill the sock with the grain and sew or tie it at the top.  Heat in a microwave 2 minutes or more, depending on how large the sock is and how full you fill it.  The heat lasts for quite awhile and feels really good on a sore neck or behind your back while sitting in a recliner.

A good prevention for sore muscles is before starting a new exercise routine or strenuous activity, take aspirin and vitamin C shortly before beginning; give it long enough to start working.  These tend to counteract acid produced by the muscle activity that causes muscular soreness.  They will reduce if not totally eliminate the pain.  It does work; my biggest problem is forgetting to take them.

I get back pain often, and use a couple of tennis *bleep* to massage, and it helps most of the time.

I normally just try to stretch out sore muscles or massage it.I also use stuff like Icy Hot or heating pad. Also, I don't use pain killers unless nothing else works.
