Kids today have cell phone, expensive, nice clothes and other accessories. I am curious if they get allowance or if parents just buy them what they want. I don't have school-aged kids, but if I did, I would make sure they have a job so that they can buy stuff and be responsible.

Our son is no longer of school age but when he was (long before cell phones).   He was given an allowance.  $1.00 for every year of his age.  He did have responsibilities and there were also consequences.   Example, if he had a plate or glass in his room and he didn't return it to the kitchen and wash it (we didn't have a dishwasher) he would be fined.  25 cents per plate and 15 cents per glass.   It only took getting a fine a couple of times and there were no longer left in his room.  His chores depended on the age.

I pretty much buy them what they want as long as they get good grades when they are away at school and they help out around the house when they come home on break. My daughter has a well paying internship at an engineering firm and my son has been working at a landscaping company so the money drain has decreased. My son is going to a big concert in Michigan on Tuesday and will need extra cash for the festivities so we will help him with the understanding that he will have a few heavy duty projects to get  done when he returns (replacing wood on our deck/windows and painting). He is good about covering that and making good on advances. During the school year I send them five dollars every three or four weeks via snail mail with loving messages. Seems to be working as both kids are on the Dean's list and looking at graduating magna *bleep* laude.
